Newcastle rose out of the relegation area, Spurs fell to 10th place

This has been a difficult season for Newcastle United fans, even though they became the richest club in the world since the Saudi-led takeover earlier this year.

The Magpies remain dismayed in the relegation zone, scoring levels with the lowest in Norwich City. And with 11 goals released and just one goal in their last three games, there’s little Christmas atmosphere among the fans.

The club and their supporters are dissatisfied not only with the team but also with the judges. So much for that The Daily Telegraph reported this on Monday that the club threatened with relegation is ready to make a formal complaint to the Premier League about the operation of their matches.

And ESPN may reveal that without VAR decisions, Newcastle would be out of the drop zone and looking down at its competitors.

It’s not just about how many times a team gets a favorable VAR call or how many goals it affects. More important is when these VAR decisions occur, how they may have changed the course of the game, and most importantly, whether this effect would ultimately change the outcome.

How to create a VAR effect table

We only take the first VAR capture in each game because the calculations take into account that no subsequent VAR incident would have occurred because the entire direction of the game has changed. (Think of it on the Marvel timeline or as a plot for any time travel movie.)

The VAR decision is then translated into the original field call – so if the goal is dismissed offside, it will be given as a goal.

If a penalty is canceled, it will be deemed to have been sentenced and scored unless the team in question has a penalty conversion record of less than 50% during the season. For example, this season Arsenal have missed all three of their penalty kicks, while every team Manchester United, Watford and West Ham United have a 100% record. If it is less than 50%, the penalty can be considered missed.

If a team has scored a goal from a penalty kick or a wrong offside through the VAR, the goal will be disqualified.

We then consider several factors before deciding on a predicted outcome:

Team format: The results of the previous six matches tell you how the team has played overall.

Event time: For example, if an event occurs late in the game, it is less likely that the leaderboard will change again after this point.

xG at the time of the event: This way we can take into account which team has created better opportunities and is at the forefront.

Team strength: In addition to form, the overall strength of the team is affected. This takes into account the league situation as well as the team’s goal and defense record during the season.

Impact of the event: For example, revoking a red card decision can change the outcome of a match.

These results have then been used to edit the table and find out what impact VAR has had on teams ’rankings this season.

The table shows the ranking of each team after the modified results, and the arrows indicate whether their league ranking is better or worse without VAR. It is worth noting that not all teams have played as many games at the moment due to COVID-related delays.

Big winners without VAR

Newcastle might go headlines, but it really is Everton who get back the most points and places without VAR decisions.

Rafael Benitez, who is under pressure after Everton’s poor form has seen them drop to 14th place in the table, gets a whopping six points, sending Toffees up six places to eighth – and just two points behind West Ham.

So what does Everton benefit from? They score two points after a late United Man winner was ruled out, while Everton had two goals at home against Watford before the Hornets returned to the game with a VAR decision – it will be a win. In addition, they received the VAR’s canceled penalty kick at home to Tottenham, leading to a new win.

Then it is Newcastle, who see their score jump 50% – from 10 to 15 – and that’s enough to lift them from the fall zone to two places to 17th place.

Everton and Newcastle have both made seven negative VAR decisions – more than any other club. But Magpies really suffer from goals as six go against their opponents as a result of VAR and a net goal of -4 – both of the worst in the Premier League. Magpies have also released the most penalties, and three decisions are against them.

Newcastle lost their home to West Ham in August after the Hammers scored an early goal, while Southampton were given an injury penalty at St James that hijacked a late draw. And Tottenham scored in the offside when Newcastle lost 3-2.

So new boss Eddie Howe will have to hope to get more from VAR if Newcastle wants to stay up.

Burnley are the only other club to benefit by more than one point, winning three in a 1-1 draw against Arsenal (they lost that game) and a 3-2 win in Leicester (which was a draw). But that’s not enough to lift Sean Dyche’s side out of the bottom three when Newcastle passes them.

Liverpool and Manchester City both get a one-point net win, which of course doesn’t change the picture at the top of the table. However, ChelseaThe result is unchanged, which means they will still lag behind in the championship.

Brentford, Leicester City, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also one point better. Wolves is the only team in the league to have no VAR decision in their favor.

Big losers without VAR
