Taiwanese Olympic gold medalist Kuo Hsing-chun received the Best Female Athlete Awards in Taipei on Friday for the fourth time, while Olympic silver winner Yang Yung-Wei won the best male athlete award for the first time.
The athletes were awarded annual prizes at a ceremony in Taipei attended by Vice President William Lai, although many of the winners competed either abroad or were quarantined.
Kuo and Yang were part of Taiwan’s Tokyo Olympic team this year, where Taiwanese athletes made their best-ever performance, winning two gold, four silver and six bronzes and finishing 34th in gold medals.

Death, considered one of Taiwan’s national sports heroes, has been a significant year.
In addition to setting two world records at the Asian Championships in April, he carried the Taiwan flag at the opening ceremony in Tokyo, where he won his first Olympic gold medal.

Yang won his first Best Male Athlete award before Lee Chih-ka, a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, Pan Cheng-zung, a golfer at the Tokyo Olympics, and Sagittarius Tang Chih-Chun.
Kuo won her fourth Best Athlete Award before Wen Tzu-yun, a Tokyo Olympic karate bronze medalist, Lo Chia-Ling, a Tokyo Olympic taekwondo bronze medalist, and Chang-Tongo Chen, a member of the Tokyo Olympic Olympic Boxing Bronze Medal, .
It is also the Dead Fifth Sports Elite Award after the 2016 Best Athlete Award.
Chen Hung-Ling won the Best Coach Award for leading gold in the four-handed badminton duo Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin in Tokyo, while Lee and Wang also won the Best Outstanding Sports Team Award.
