(Reuters) – Former England captain Ray Illingworth, who was part of the team’s Ashes victory in Australia from 1970 to 1971, has died at the age of 89, County Club Yorkshire said on Saturday.
Illingworth said in November that he had been in the treatment of esophageal cancer.
“Our thoughts are with Ray’s family and the wider Yorkshire family who kept Ray so close to his heart,” Yorkshire tweeted at https://twitter.com/YorkshireCCC/status/1474730255357292545.
Illingworth served as England captain in 31 test matches from 1958 to 1973 and played for the first time in a one-day national match in 1971.
He also had spells as an administrator and national team coach.
