Canadian Denis Shapovalov said he received a positive Covid-19 test when he arrived in Sydney for the ATP Cup 2022 tournament. (More tennis news)
The 22-year-old is one of the first foreign players to arrive in Australia and will be part of a Canadian team in a team-based tournament in Sydney from 1 to 9. January before the Australian Open in Melbourne on 17 January.
Shapovalov played last week at the World Tennis Championships in Abu Dhabi, where he won Rafael Nadal’s third place in the playoffs. Nadal also had a positive coronavirus test after the tournament, as did Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic and Tunisian Ons Jabeur.

Former world number one Shapovalov said on social media that he is isolated and experiencing only minor symptoms. “Hi everyone, I just wanted to tell you that when I arrived in Sydney I got a positive COVID test,” Shapovalov said.
“I follow all the protocols, including isolating and informing the people I have been in contact with. At the moment, I have mild symptoms and look forward to getting back on the field when it’s safe. ”
All players must return the negative tests 72 hours prior to the flight to Australia, as well as test once upon arrival in the country and isolate pending results.
