There are at least some positive things about the current state of Minnesota Wild. With Jared Spurgeon (injury) and Jonas Brodin (COVID) unlikely to play in the Winter Classic on Jan. 1, rookie defender Calen Addison gets his shots on the blue line in an outdoor event.

The lines are still unclear, but given that the team previously called Kevin Czuczman as an additional defender instead of Addison earlier this season; Addison should be in the lineup.
Ever since Addison made his NHL debut last season during the more devastating COVID epidemic, he has been patrolling the blue line with force in Iowa or sitting in a press box in Minnesota. The 21-year-old has only played three games in Wild this season (including one goal) but has earned nine points in 17 AHL Wild matches. Continuous back and forth really doesn’t help you feel stable in any position, but he should fight for a flat spot in the lineup if everything works and as long as one regular blueliner is gone.
Who really knows what couples are going to be, but we can see something like this:
Goligoski – Dumba
Merrill – Kulikov
Benn – Addison
It’s awkward when your two most stable forces are out of lineup, but when we know Evason, we don’t have a real idea of which player is skating with which player before the morning.
Evason mentioned Tuesday morning that Wild plans to summon at least one more striker and also a defender. Maybe this includes some new additions to the re-introduced taxi groups, or they go straight to the list.
#mnwild is also expected to recall at least one defender and striker by Thursday.

Maybe Addison will get a chance for an increased offensive role because they need his transition skills without Brodin and Spurgeon? Or maybe they’ll play it safe and get the restraining effect of the usual talent, maintaining the familiar Merrill-Kulikov partnership and getting Dumba to play when Goligoski returns to his natural left side. Here we just guess.
Wild’s next game is on January 1st and it’s against the Winter Classic St. Louis Blues in the target field.
