Brian Kelly made one of the most significant salaries for his first LSU football player on Tuesday and chose Assistant Chiefs Matt House as his defense coordinator.
House, who has extensive experience in both the university and the NFL, has worked at the Chiefs since 2019 and won the Super Bowl in the LIV franchise series. Prior to this NFL job, he served as an indoor club coach, special teams coordinator, and eventually defense coordinator in Kentucky.
A graduate of the state of Michigan has also served as defense coordinator at Pitt and FIU, and has experience at North Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Buffalo and his alma mater at the college level, and at Panthers and Rams as a professional.
“Matt will check the box for each defense coordinator we’re looking for,” Kelly said in a LSU announcement about hiring. “He has led the defense of the SEC’s elite, recruited and developed entire conference and All-American performers in a variety of roles, and gained a wealth of experience both as an NFL and as a coordinator at several colleges.
“He has a good understanding of how to defend the types of attacks we face each week at our conference, and his ability to make players fit the game perfectly with the identity we want to develop with our defense. I am excited that he will join our staff as we work to build a championship program at LSU.
House will join LSU after the Chiefs’ term ends. His pay received rave reviews from one LSU giant on the Chiefs list: defending defender Tyrann Mathieu.
“It’s an honor to join Coach Kelly’s staff at LSU,” House said. “I firmly believe in coach Kelly’s vision and look forward to getting to work. I’m sure the Tiger football family is facing many exciting times ahead. Our staff works tirelessly to develop our young men both on and off the field as we set the championship standard – We develop genuine relationships with our players, staff and the wonderful people of the state of Louisiana!
House thanked the Chiefs and especially coaches Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo for the opportunity to get a franchise.
Kansas City has reached an 11-4 record and reached the AFC playoffs. The team has become a favorite to return to the third consecutive Super Bowl.
