Rafael Nadal will play at the January Australian Open in Melbourne. The Spaniard has outlined his plans to continue competing in the Grand Slam during the final stages of his career and is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony in 2022 in January.

Nadal’s chances of playing down were jeopardized earlier this month when the tennis athlete’s COVID-19 test was positive when competing at an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.

However, it seems that this has not stopped plans to compete in the Australian Open after a booking was made to play at the ATP 250 in Melbourne in preparation for the opening of the year in the Grand Slam.

There was a real fear that the sports trio – Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer – would have to miss the event.

This happened after Federer ruled himself out due to an injury, while Djokovic’s chances of competing are unknown when he refused to disclose his COVID-19 vaccine status.

The tournament organizers ’fears then increased after Nadal’s positive incident, but now it looks like at least one of the tennis headlines will be in Melbourne on January 17th.

This has been further strengthened after Australian Open CEO Craig Tiley allayed fears that Nadal would not compete.

Tiley revealed he had confidence in a Spanish trip to Melbourne earlier this week.

And the 35-year-old was found practicing at his academy in Mallorca on Wednesday, proving he was worthy of his trip to Down Under. He is expected to fly next week.

The injury weakened Nadal once again last season as the 20-time Grand Slam winner has not competed since ATP Washington in August this year.
