Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez began his 2022 season victory on Monday, beating Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the 6-3, 6-4 first-round action at Adelaide International.

Fernandez changed 86 percent of his first pass points and won four aces. A 19-year-old man from Queen Laval did not face a break point and broke Alexandrova twice with eight chances.

Fernandez, who is ranked 24th in the world, will face the winner of the fifth match between Iga Swiatek of Poland and Daria Saville of Australia in the next WTA 500 tournament as they prepare for the Australian Open. The first Grand Slam of the year kicks off on January 17 in Melbourne.

The rising Canadian star kicks off from the breakthrough season of 2021, when she won her first WTA championship in Monterrey, Mexico, and progressed to the U.S. Open final on her way to winning the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as Canadian Press Women’s Athlete of the Year.
