Cricket Australia recalls Khawaja, Boland passed the fourth Ashes test

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Usman Khawaja will replace Travis Head in Australia’s average ranking in this week’s fourth Ashes test against England in the only change to the side that ended the series last week in Melbourne, skipper Pat Cummins said Tuesday.

Khawaja’s return to his first test after 2019 was expected after Head was ruled out due to a positive COVID-19 test, but the retention of flyer Scott Boland was a surprise.

Boland was considered an Melbourne expert when he made his debut in the third test, but the 32-year-old took the opportunity with both hands.

His six of the seven in the second installment helped Australia to a pounding turn and a 14-run win and earned him a chance to maintain his place in favor of Josh Hazlewood, who still suffers from a side draw that continued in the first test.

“It’s no secret that if Joshy Hazlewood were available, he was going to play, he’s been a great bowler for us for a long time,” Cummins told reporters at the Sydney cricket ground, where the match kicks off on Wednesday.

“It would have been a real shame if Scotty hadn’t played this week after his efforts last week. It’s unfortunate for Josh, but I’m really glad (Scott) gets a new crack here.

Cummins said Hazlewood would probably be eligible to play in the fifth test in Hobart on 14-18. January.

There were suggestions in the local media that cyclist Mitchell Swepson might get his first test cap in double attacks with Nathan Lyon.

However, Cummins said he did not expect the SCG mouse to deteriorate enough to make it a profitable strategy.

“I don’t think two-wheelers have been dictated anywhere in Australia where I’ve played in the last two years,” he added.

“He’s a class bowler, and we want to get him aside one day. We believe he will make his debut at some point, probably abroad.

Australia lead the series 3-0 after winning in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.

Team: David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wicketkeeper), Pat Cummins (captain), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland.
