Iowa Football Ranking Ratings: Kentucky

So it was … frustrating. It was one of the most interesting and bizarre seasons for Iowa Hawkeye Football lately. This team won 10 games. Our exciting win against Penn State and ranking second in the country made us a little greedy. Before the season, I tied this team to 7-8 wins. This team played for the most part great defense and special teams. For most of the year, the crime felt like it couldn’t fight out of a wet paper bag. At some point against Kentucky, I felt like we needed two defensive goals to win the game. There were a lot of positive aspects to the game. Unfortunately, the elephant in the room is our quarterback situation. Per grade.

Violation

QB: D-

I went back and forth several times between D and F. I ended up in D-. Maybe this was two days to deal with the loss, and I felt bad for our quarterback. Spencer Petras has always been the standup type. Petras made a few great throws. He was 19-30 by 211 yards and touchdown. It was good. The bad was really, really bad. Petras threw three cuts during the day. He also had one of the worst nasties you’ll ever see. Iowa was following in the fourth quarter and Brian Ferentz the running game is spinning. (I honestly thought Brian called it a pretty good football game). This opened our play-action pass game. Petra had a wide, wide, wide open Nico Ragaini and passed him a quarter mile. It will be very interesting to see what happens to our quarterback room during the offseason. Alex Padilla did not see the field when Petras threw three selections. No one could accuse him of looking elsewhere. The Hawks have Joey Hello list and Carson May coming in. Hawkeyes must bring in a transfer to compete from the starting point. In addition, everyone knows that Kirk Ferentz values ​​experience above almost anything else. He is fiercely loyal. Bringing a transfer to this place is the most anti-Kirk ever. Hopefully his staff coaches will remind him of Brad Banks ’move and he was a revelation of Iowa’s crime. We can’t expect different results next year if we do the same.

RB: A-

I pointed out a little cleverly during the game, where I asked if Tyler Goodson was our third best runner. I joked, but I’ve been commenting on it all year Gavin Williams

and Leshon Williams get north and south much faster than Goodson did. Goodson was a great Hawk, but I’m very excited to see these two backs evolve. Gavin rushed 98 yards with 16 moves (6.1). Most importantly, he had no position where he lost yards. Leshon carried the ball 10 times 42 yards (4.2). Ivory Kelly-Martin carried the ball once 12 yards.

WR: D

News that Keagan Johnson not playing was not great for this team. He has been one of our few threats in the attack. The widths were not inspiring against the Wildcats. Much of it was related to erroneous throws that were not aimed at the tight ends of Iowa. Arland Bruce IV should evolve into a multidimensional gameplay. Bruce IV ran the ball twice 21 yards including this touchdown.

He also got four assists during the day. With the exception of Bruce, there wasn’t much.

TE: A

Spencer Petras and Sam LaPorta you need to tell others the secrets that make them click. LaPorta was the dude that day. He grabbed seven passes from 122 yards and one touchdown.

Luke Lachey there was also one catch from 15 yards. When Iowa football can run the ball and get tough heads involved, good things usually happen. LaPorta and Lachey have taken great leaps this season.

OJ: B +

Iowa’s line of attack seemed to take leaps from the Big Ten Championship to the bowl. Iowa did not allow a kick that day. In addition to this, the Hawkeyes ran 30 times for 173 yards (5.8). There was some controversy over Iowa’s failed fourth descent when the supposedly defending lineman touched the ball. That and that fact Tyler Linderbaum was absent due to injury, which resulted in Iowa not going to the 4th landing and the football game that would have left the game. Sigh. Baumer is impossible to replace, but Iowa’s young offensive line took significant leaps as the season progressed.

Defense

DL: B +

Iowa managed to put excellent pressure on the Kentucky quarterback Will Levis. The Hawks fired him six times. Zach VanValkenburg was a bunch that collected eight tackles, 2 sacks, and 2.5 TFLs. The TFL, which ZVV missed, could have won Hawks games like VanValkenburg Chris Rodriguez ended up in an eleven-game 6-yard run in eleven games. Noah Shannon he had five tackles and a sack. Lukas Van Ness collected four tackles and a sack. Logan Lee joined the sack parade with five tackles and a sack. Joe Evans collected the last sack of Iowa. Everyone except VanValkenburg will return to this group. Kelvin Bell has done an excellent job with this group. At the start of the season, I thought this group would be a weakness for Hawks.

LB: B

Jack Campbell once again led Iowa in tackles with 14. This young man could be the next All-American of the Hawkeyes. Seth Benson he had ten tackles and 1 QBH. Benson always does an excellent job of getting into football. One area that is overlooked is that Benson always grabs or jumps on loose balls. Even if the game is over, he has the mentality of picking up the ball. There is no such thing as a small thing. Jestin Jacobs there were four tackles during the day. I was surprised and glad that Kentucky didn’t run Chris Rodriguez more than they did. He plunged 20 times 107 yards (5.3). This linebacker group could be one of the best units in the country next year.

Injuries burdened this group this season. Matt Hankins, Riley Moss, and Terry Roberts everyone missed a significant time this year. The advantage of this is that it allows Jermari Harris to see the field. He ran with this opportunity. Harris grabbed a stop in every last three of his games. Harris picked up Levis and also had two feed interruptions. Jack Koerner he skipped a few of the tackles he usually made; he was more than likely. Koerner continues to play in the league. Kaevon Merriweather made a huge legal hit Wan’Dale Robinson but Robinson held the ball on the final run. Sometimes you just have to raise your hat for a child. Robinson played two great games in the final run. Riley Moss didn’t play a typical game, which was more than likely he was his last game in Hawkeyes. It will be exciting to see Cooper DeJean and Xavier Nwankpa

Special teams: A-

It was again a good game for Iowa special teams. Tory Taylor hit 4 times at an average of 50 yards. Taylor’s goal should be to lead the nation in punting. He has that potential. Caleb Shudak ended the fantastic season 2 against with 2 extra points and scored their only field goal from 28 yards away. It would have been nice if Shudak had a chance to level up at the end of the game. Charlie Jones it was a quiet day. It would be a big recruiting win for Iowa to get Jones back for another year.
