Spain beat Serbia and join Poland in the ATP Cup semi-finals

SYDNEY – Pablo Carreno Busta hit Filip Krajinovic 6-3, 6-4 to secure the ATP Cup semi-final place for Spain and Roberto Bautista Agut finished the group stage victory over Serbia with a loss of 6-1, 6-4 Dusan Lajovic later on Wednesday in the second duel.

Spain only needed to win one of three matches against Serbia to the top of Group A and get a semi-final against Poland.

Carreno Busta finished the job in 80 minutes and recorded his third single-game win in the round Robin.

“It was the best match in the group,” Carreno Busta said in an interview after the match. “I’m close to 100%. Today I played very well, very aggressively, very stably. I feel very comfortable on the field, so it’s going well.”

Spain dropped just one set on the way to victory over the 2020 champions Chile, Norway and Serbia.

Chile’s 2-1 victory over Norway in the day’s session meant Serbia had to sweep Spain to move forward.

Alexander Tabilo hit Viktor Durasovic 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-1 for Chile before 8th place Casper Ruud leveled it out for Norway by beating Christian Garin 6-4, 6-1.

Tabilo and Tomas Barrios Vera won the doubles 6-0, 6-4, giving Chile a 2-1 record in the round robin and leaving Norway 0-3.

Poland reached the semifinals for the first time in 9th place Hubert Hurkacz defeated Argentina Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-4 following Kamil Majchrzak6-3, 7-6 (3) to win Federico Delbonis.

Poland finished the round robin 3-0 in the D-block, also beating Georgia and Greece.

“I’m so happy with our team. We’re in the semi-finals, so very proud of the achievement,” Hurkacz said. “We have a great team spirit. We support each other. I think the atmosphere we bring will help us play better.”

Greece took their first win by winning the last place in Georgia 2-0.
