Tar Heels CB Tony Grimes, a former 5-star enlisted, responded to DC Jay Bateman’s departure

North Carolina football roads parted ways with the defense coordinator Jay Bateman This week, the decision came to South Carolina Gamecocks after a 38-21 loss to Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Tar Heels played an average of 418.1 yards and 32.1 points per game, ranking 105th out of 130 FBS teams. Tar Heels ’corner defender and former five-star enlisted reacted to Bateman’s resignation. Grimes played 12 games in North Carolina after appearing in eight games as freshmen a year ago. He made a total of 47 tackles (two losses) and defended nine assists when the UNC finished 6-7.

Grimes took Twitter and wrote “smh.” Grimes tweeted shortly after the news of Bateman’s shooting erupted.

UNC’s defense was among the worst in the ACC in 2021, ranking 94th in the country with an average total of over 400 yards of attack per game. Tar Heels gave his opponent 35 points or more seven times during the 2021 season.

Brown said he was disappointed with his team’s defensive efforts in last week’s loss to South Carolina.

“() The most disappointing thing I led to is that they rushed 301 yards and we 128. I don’t think you can win football games if that’s the case,” he told reporters after the game. “Second, you have to make a third landing and stay on the field. They got seven, eight yards in the first downtime, which made their third landing easy 6 against 11, and we were 1:10, so apparently we weren’t. ‘ “There was one long run and we were very consistent with the rest of our running game. When you can’t do these two things, you lose the game, and it’s football.”

Bateman came to North Carolina after serving as a defense coordinator in the military from 2014 to 2018, and was considered one of the most promising and innovative defensive minds in college football at the time. When the news was announced that Bateman would join head coach Brown’s staff at Chapel Hill, the salary deserved praise and an overwhelmingly positive reaction across the board.

In Army, Bateman was a Broyles Award finalist in two different seasons (2016 and ’18) and led one of the most suffocating and offensive defenses. The Army was ranked 9th in the overall defense in 2018, 33rd in 2017 and 3rd in 2016.

A native of Virginia, Bateman had previous experience recruiting in the state of North Carolina as Elon’s defense coordinator from 2006 to 2010. He continued to recruit the state of Tar Heel while at Ball State and Army.
