Novak Djokovic latest update: Tennis star practices in Australia as family holds press conference after visa complaint

Questions continue to arise about Novak Djokovic’s positive Covid-19 test after the tennis player’s family refused to answer whether the world’s number one had violated self-isolation rules at a news conference on Monday.

The Serb was arrested at an immigration center and his visa was revoked after reviewing a medical exemption granted after assessments by two independent medical panels before the 34-year-old flew to Australia. But Djokovic’s law team left the papers to appeal the border control’s original decision, confirming he was positive on Dec. 16 and had recovered from Covid.

Judge Anthony Kelly overturned an order on Monday to cancel Djokovic’s visa, and the player continued to practice after his release, but his family was questioned after photos of Djokovic appeared in public without a mask on December 17th.

Novak Djokovic is still threatened with deportation, although he won an appeal against the decision to deny him a visa in the Australian Federal District Court before the Australian Open.

Judge Anthony Kelly revoked the visa revocation and ordered the Australian government to pay the costs of the proceedings and release Djokovic from arrest within half an hour.

But Immigration Secretary Alex Hawke is still considering whether to exercise his personal right to revoke Djokovic’s visa in a process that could take several days.

Meanwhile, Djokovic’s uncle Goran Djokovic claimed that Australian authorities urged Djokovic to abandon the fight or threatened to get a three-year entry ban.

In a statement to the AAP, a spokesman for Minister Hawke said: “Following today’s procedural decision by the Federal Circuit and Family Court, it is at the discretion of Immigration Minister Hawke to consider revoking Djokovic’s visa on the basis of his personal revocation authority.

– The Minister is currently discussing the matter and the process is continuing.

As Djokovic’s difficulty traveling to Australia without the vaccine, the question arises as to whether he will face similar struggles in other countries.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been asked whether the world’s no. 1 is welcome to Wimbledon when the tournament is held in June and July.

He said: “It is important for the Australian authorities to make their own decisions.

– I’d just say Novak Djokovic – against whom I’ve played tennis by the way, he’s pretty good. [is that] I believe in vaccinations and I think that’s a great thing. ”

Djokovic’s father, Srdan, has said his son’s appeal victory is a victory for freedom of speech.

Djokovic continued training before the Australian Open, and his family held a passionate press conference praising the release of “justice.”

“People of the world, thank you for your absolute support,” Djokovic’s father said. “He fought for freedom of thought, freedom of speech. It has been very, very difficult for us, like all free thinkers in the world. But he is a very strong, fantastic young man who tries to help, never hurt.

Djokovic’s mother, Dijana, spoke of the “torture” her son has faced since his visa was revoked a few days ago.

At a news conference, he said: “He has always fought for justice. He has done nothing wrong. He has not broken their laws and he has been tortured, harassed, and we will hear more about what he had to go through.

“He fought it and he felt he deserved to be there. We have never before encountered a situation like this that was very difficult for us. These six days we have been trying to fight for him to make sure the voice he hears around the world. Emotions there have been many kinds of sorrow, fear, disappointment.There were times when he didn’t have a phone, we didn’t know what happened.We had no idea if he was sick or if he had eaten.

– This is the biggest win of his career. Bigger than any Grand Slam he has won.

Djokovic has been unclear when asked if he has received the vaccine and did not tell reporters if he has received it. But documents revealed at the appeal hearing confirmed that the star has not received its vaccinations.

His family spoke at press conferences about the “torture” the star has experienced in recent days. World no. 1 may continue to be deported in the coming days if the government decides to revoke his visa.
