According to a BBC report, the future of Lewis Hamilton may depend on the outcome of a study by the FIA Abu Dhabi GP in the final rounds.
Last month, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said Hamilton was “disappointed” in the F1 series after losing the title in a controversial way, suggesting that the seven-time world champion was considering continuing the race.
In the race-ending race, FIA race director Michael Masi misapplied the rules to force a restart for the final round, leaving Hamilton, a very weaker, an easy victim to Max Verstappen, who overtook his rival to win the championship.
Mercedes did not complain about the outcome of the race shortly after the FIA announced it would investigate Mas’s decision at the end of the race. Its outcome is likely to play a key role in dictating what Hamilton will do next.
Hamilton has not spoken in public or on social media since he left the paddock on December 12th.
According to a BBC report, Mercedes has also challenged its agreement with the FIA that Masi and FIA Director of Single-seat Affairs, Nikolas Tombazis, will no longer be available for 2022.
In any case, Mas’s future is uncertain before a new season begins at the Bahrain GP on March 20th. Masi took on the role after the sudden death of long-serving race director Charlie Whiting before the 2019 Australian GP, and it is unclear whether there will be an obvious replacement if the FIA should find a new one.
The FIA investigation was key to Mercedes abandoning the complaint, and the reigning master builders fully expect it to be a thorough and serious process. Speaking a few hours after Mercedes abandoned the complaint, Wolff said his team hopes to get a title to the FIA account for the race to move forward.
