DENVER (AP) – Grocery workers in the Denver area began the strike on Wednesday after their union rejected the latest contract offer from a chain of stores owned by Kroger Co., the nation’s largest traditional grocery chain.
Members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 allege King Soopers unfair working practices. King Soopers has accused the union of the same thing.
On Tuesday, the union rejected a contract offer that included $ 170 million in salary increases and health benefits, as well as bonuses ranging from $ 2,000 to $ 4,000 for ratifying the agreement, the Denver Post reported.
“Our original offer was $ 148 million in salary increases. We raised it to $ 170 million this morning, the largest salary increase in the history of King Soopers and City Market,” King Joe Kelley, president of King Soopers and City Market, said Tuesday.
The company has both King Soopers and City Market stores in Colorado.
Union President Kim Cordova said King Soopers had not provided the information he needed, such as salaries, pensions and health care, to evaluate the proposal. He said it also contained unacceptable provisions, including restrictions on the ability of workers to work overtime.
King Soopers and City Market said the shops would remain open despite the strike.
