When fans of the TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt watch the Bundesliga home game live online, they can’t ignore two people: Fabian and Markus Grothe have made their name as expert commentators in recent months.
But that’s not all: The Twins have had their own podcast since May 1 with the “Twins Talk Table Tennis” app, which can be listened to for free through popular providers like Spotify, Deezer and Google Podcasts. Marco Steinbrenner talked about it to the brothers.
How did the idea of producing your own table tennis podcast come about?
Markus Grothe: We have received positive feedback on our comments in the Premier League games. It was said that we had pleasant voices and people were happy to listen to us as we talked about table tennis.
The title of the podcast is clear …
Fabian Grothe: (laughs) That’s true because we’re twins and the English name sounds good. We really weren’t very creative in our search, but on the other hand, it’s easy to remember.
How long is the preparation time for the episode?
Markus Grothe: Initially, voice inspections were conducted regularly. After eight months, we have more routine and also confidence in technology. That’s why it’s gone. We collect ideas and save them in writing to a file. An initial appointment usually takes half an hour. Cutting and writing takes an equal amount of time. A new episode will appear every other week, on Saturdays.
What is content?
Fabian Grothe: Of course, we deal with classic topics such as educational content and competitions. We also analyze past Bundesliga games because there is simply not enough time for it during live broadcasts. But it also applies to 1. Bundesliga general topics, top teams, top players and anecdotes on the outskirts of the gang.
Markus Grothe: Since this season, we have played on one team again. We also participate in our federal league matches.
What technical requirements are needed?
Fabian Grothe: We once bought two microphones. We then create donations using free computer programs.
So far, there have been four guests in 17 episodes.
Markus Grothe: Of course, Benedikt Duda’s episode has so far attracted the most interest. But we also had talks with our coach Lei Yang, Olympic participant Han Ying and former youth international and defense strategist Balazs Hutter.
Do you have a personal favorite episode?
Fabian and Markus Grothe: We once dealt with incorrect entries and optimal competition preparation. It was also about psychological issues. How do I deal with it when my opponent throws his fist at me? For example, after a big rally, will I raise my thumb even though I didn’t score a goal?
Do you have topics you really want to address?
Markus Grothe: Through my YouTube channel, we handle a lot of defense games. There we always get questions and suggestions. But we also want to deal with the awesome Bergneustadt Club Chronicle, which was published last year in honor of the anniversary.
Whose guest would you like to chat with table tennis?
Fabian Grothe: We want to call Benedikt Duda more often. Alvaro Robles has been playing at Bergneustadt for over four years now. We get along well with him privately. He is very pleasant and will certainly be heard soon. The same goes for Alberto Mino. We would also like to talk to Annett Kaufmann, the most promising young German at the moment. But that’s wishful thinking right now, because he gets a lot of queries.
