Former tennis star Chris Evert says he has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer at an early stage.
Evert, 67, revealed his illness in a story published Friday at ESPN.com; he is an announcer for ESPN.
She learned about the cancer last month and started chemotherapy this week.
“I have lived a very charming life. Now I have challenges ahead of me, Evert said. “But I’m comforted when I know that chemotherapy makes sure the cancer doesn’t come back.”
Evert won 18 Grand Slam championships, reached No. 1 on the WTA list, and was elected to the International Hall of Fame in 1995.
Her sister Jeanne Evert Dubin died of ovarian cancer in February 2020 at the age of 62.
“Be your own advocate. Know your family’s history. Be fully aware of your body, follow your guts, and be aware of the changes,” Evert said in the ESPN story. “Don’t try to be a crusader and think this will pass.”
