Flexibility means how much the blade bends along its longitudinal axis. The amount of flexibility depends primarily on the rigidity of the blade. Rigid blades have little flexibility and vice versa. Many people use this term when they really want to refer to a central deviation. The standard deviation is how much the blade twists perpendicular to its plane. The main component here is the density of the materials used and the structure of the blade. This is what we call hard or soft steel. Many people associate hardness with the top layer, but it’s not just that (more on that later). So we can have stiff but soft blades, flexible but hard blades and everything in between.

I can clearly see the animated images you submitted. This will help. There seems to be a pendulum in “Flex.”

Is there always more vibration in the more flexible blades or is there something else in the game that determines the vibration?

In general (it also depends on other variables) flexibility controls the trajectory. Higher stiffness results in a smoother trajectory, while lower stiffness results in a curved trajectory. Stiffer blades are usually used close to the table for gaming and focus more on speed than rotation, while more flexible blades are used more for looping from a distance.

The mean deflection guides our perceived hardness, which we call the residence time. A larger standard deviation means more sensation in the hand. Harder blades give a feeling of a shorter residence time and vice versa. This is a personal preference, e.g., power loopers don’t usually like very soft blades because they feel the blade “holds” the ball too much.

I understood my personal preference for stiff but soft blades because I tend to play close to the table. I think the elastic blades are bad when you hit hard and close the counter loop because the elasticity causes inaccuracy in where you think the ball will land, which feels like a lack of control.
