As Australians began celebrating the retention of Ashes after the destruction of England’s 4-0 series, Usman Khawaja was portrayed escaping the stage with his teammates.
Not that he didn’t want to celebrate, on the contrary.

But Khawaja is a Muslim and his religion prevents him from drinking.
As the champagne caps began to fly and the liquid of success was sprayed around, Aussian skipper Pat Cummins quickly noticed that there was one baggy green on stage with a team in the form of less Khawaja.
As soon as he and Marnus Labuschagne called and hinted to Khawaja that he would rejoin the team when Cummins also pushed a bottle of champagne with his teammates on the floor of the stage so Khawaja could join the party without spraying alcohol.
Khawaja posted footage on social media from the moment and praised his teammates for keeping him involved.

If this video doesn’t show the boys have my back, I don’t know what will come, Khawaja said.
They stopped the normal champagne party so I could rejoin. Participation in the game and our values as a sport are very important.
I feel like we are heading in the right direction.
It was an incredibly stylish gesture from Cummins, who has enjoyed a great series of debut tests since he was named captain.
We have a really diverse group and you want to celebrate it and you want to make sure everyone feels comfortable being themselves. It was just a moment, Cummins said.
The boys are awesome in that state. They always take care of each other. It’s a really close-knit group.
I think one reason is that we have a lot of respect and love for each other. We had to make sure our teammates were in the photo with us.

As for Khawaja, he could not have asked for a better return to the test team after his three-year absence.
He did a century on both Australian innings in the Sydney Test, but he didn’t enjoy the same success in Hobart, scoring just 6 and 11, but he opened the batting turn instead of becoming zero. 5 in the order he did in the SCG.
It remains to be seen if he has done enough to justify staying on the team for Australia’s upcoming peninsula tour, but it would be a really special moment for Khawaja, who was born in Islamabad, Pakistan.
