Australian Open tennis: US Anisimova upset Olympic champion;  Barty, Nadal on

January 19 (UPI) – Ash Barty, Naomi Osaka and Rafael Nadal were among the best tennis players to advance to the third round of the 2022 Australian Open on Wednesday with victories in Melbourne.

American Amanda Anisimova overcame one day of significant disruption, winning the 2020 Summer Games gold medal by Swiss Belinda Bencic.

“I felt like I wanted to use my experience and get started quickly,” Barty told reporters. “I was able to do that. I served well, was able to find plenty of palmprints and manage the match pretty well.”

Barty, the women’s best seed, beat Italian Lucia Bronzett in 52 minutes. Australia won 6-1, 6-1 with a total of eight aces and 21 wins. Barbora Krezcikova from the Czech Republic, Maria Sakkari from Greece and Paula Badosa from Spain were among the other advancing women.

Well. 13 Japan’s Naomi Osaka beat American Madison Brengle 6-0, 6-4. Defending the singles championship won the match in 65 minutes.

Anisimova, 20, took 88 minutes to send Bencici, No. 22 seed. He shot seven aces and 28 winners in this triumph. No. 21 Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys were the other American women to advance to third-round victories on Wednesday.

“Belinda is a really tough opponent and I knew it was going to be a tough match, especially [weather] conditions today. I’m really excited about the third round. ”

Anisimova will face Osaka in her third round match.

Alexander Zverev of Germany, Rafael Nadal of Spain and Matteo Berrettini of Italy 7 advanced in the first wave of the second round.

Zverev defeated Australian John Millman 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. Nadal defeated German Yannick Hanfmann 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Berrettini defeated American Stefan Kozlov 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Adrian Mannarino survived the latest losses and won Poland’s 10th Hubert Hurkacz straight series. Well. 23 Reilly Opelka and Sebastian Korda were loan Americans who advanced to second round on Wednesday.

The second round of broadcasts will continue at 7 p.m. and will continue through Thursdays at 7 a.m. on ESPN + and ESPN2.
