BBL Cricket: Stars impose ‘crazy’ Steve Smith ban | Sydney Sixers v Perth Scorchers

On Friday, Cricket Australia announced that Smith will not be allowed to play in the Sixers in their Big Bash qualifiers against Perth Scorchers on Saturday or participate in any finals.

Despite the Sixers having a vacancy on their list, the rule introduced on January 10 has prevented the club’s favorite boy from returning to the league – substitutes will now only have to be selected from local players within BBL’s Melbourne Center.

The decision was made by BBL’s technical committee and cricket CEOs across the country were consulted.

After completing his test mission inside the biosafety Ashes bubble, Smith had flown to Melbourne with the Sixers and was waiting to play, but was denied the opportunity for technical reasons.

Smith had no contract with the Sixers this season, unlike Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja, who have played for the Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder respectively after winning Ashes.

However, the decision not to allow Smith to play in the Sixers has been severely beaten by current and former players because they believe CA has failed to do the trick by not allowing one of Australia’s best players to bet on BBL.

Many argue that the CA cannot claim that the decision was made to preserve the integrity of Big Bash because the Melbourne Stars were forced to use local substitutes when Covid destroyed them in the middle of the season.

Sixers captain Moises Henriques was furious at the call, which he said was “absolutely confusing.”

“To say (I’m) a little dissatisfied would be an understatement,” he said.

“You have IPL Teams that pay several million dollars just to get this guy part of their franchise business, and we say no because of the two-week-old rule and some Covid bubble center. For me, I just don’t understand that.

“We are among the top two without him, so I have absolute faith in doing our domestic talents and our local talents. I think it’s sad for cricket, that’s all. “

Former test opener and Melbourne Stars hitter Joe Burns said the decision made no sense and tweeted: Smith to be on the televised team he always represented and led #ReplacementsOverSmudge.

Sixers ’versatile Dan Christian agreed when he said CA and Big Bash shot themselves in the leg when they wouldn’t let him play.

“@bbl can’t attract the best OS players in the game for the entire game because of ‘conflicting schedules’ (meaning we pay less and it takes too long),” he said.

“But when one of our local Australian stars suddenly becomes available and wants to play, CA says he can’t. Ch7 & Fox is definitely excited.”

NSW tactician Trent Copeland added: “Honestly. A unique window where our BEST players are available for the # BBL11 finals. The biggest domestic product we have.

“It’s not Steve Smith’s thing. Call it Player X. This is an awareness of what’s important in general for fans, viewers, CHILDREN watching, etc. Really a shame.”
