Tennis opens the spring with a 6-1 victory over the army

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers ’tennis opened its season with a 6-1 army victory on Saturday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. Scarlet Knights earned the team a double point and five doubles wins. Freshmen Minchae Kim and Jackie Lopez made their college debut in the RU match.

“We had a pretty good fall season, so it gave us the confidence we needed. We started the season with a good win to get the confidence to play Big Ten matches and also non-conference matches. I think we all did a great job, the cheering was amazing. Today the word was confidence, so we did a good job with it, “said the sophomore. Daira Cardenas, who won the match for Rutgers.

Rutgers claimed the double point took the lead 1-0 at the start of the match. Second year student Alisa Prinyarux and freshman Jackie Lopez won 6-2 in doubles position # 3. Senior Tess Fisher and freshman Minchae Kim then cruising 6-0 to victory in the number 1 double spot, securing the team to score RU.

In single player, senior Sydney Kaplan led the way 6-4, 7-5 with a win at number 3, raising the RU advantage to 2-0. Freshman Jackie Lopez it was followed by a victory of 6-2, 6-3 in 2nd place.

Caredenas won the match in RU 4th place and won the 6-4, 7-5 Scarlet Knight advantage 4-0. Senior Kristiana Zahare won 6-2, 7-6 (1), 10-5 in 5th place, while Kim won 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 in 6th place.

Rutgers will first split their weekend with a home game against NJIT on Friday, January 28th. The Scarlet Knights will then travel to UPenni on Saturday, January 29th.
