Men’s Tennis Center: # 1 Tennessee vs. # 10 Wake Forest

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The top-ranked Tennessee men’s tennis team has prepared for the top 10 by hosting 10.^th-posed in the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest on Tuesday. The first serving is set at 1pm at the ET Goodfriend Tennis Center.

Tuesday is 18^th an all-time match between Tennessee (3-0) and Wake Forest (7-0) and the first since 2017. The Vols lead the series with an all-time difference of 12-5. Fans coming to the match will be pampered with donuts and coffee.

THE LAST TIME

Tennessee’s final match was an exciting 4-3 road win to the then-fifth-place finish at TCU on Sunday, January 16th. Single-player gains from second study. John Monday, freshman Shunsuke Mitsui, graduate student Adam Walton and a starting point for the junior Angel Diaz earned Vols the top five wins.

SOUTING WAKE FORESTIN

When Big Orange played 17 of the 12 matches between the two programs, the longest winning streak in the series, which began in 1975, came when UT won the Demon Deacons 12 times in a row, the series spanning the years 1982-2014.

This year, Wake Forest will start the double season 7-0, and every match will be played at home in Winston-Salem. It won Tennessee Tech twice in the season opener, as well as winning the Coastal Carolina and Elon doubles and the third doubles from Davidson and Gardner-Webb.

Tuesday’s win would give Vols its ninth 4-0 start in the last 10 seasons.

NUMBER ONE

When Tennessee takes the court on Tuesday, it will be the first time since March 19, 2011, that they have done so as the country’s number one team. They drilled in Arkansas, 7-0 that day to improve the conference 15-2 and 5-0. Jarryd Chaplin, who is currently the assistant head coach of the Tennessee Women’s Tennis Program, was a member of Vols that season and was on the team from 2011-2014. Vols ended the 2011 dual season with a record 24-5 and advanced to the NCAA semi-finals.

BENEFIT OF THE COURT OF HOME

Since the start of the 2019 dual season, Vols has been able to hit a strong home record of 41-4. Big Orange won 12 wins in 2019 and 2020, recorded 15-0 at home in 2021 and is 2-0 in Knoxville to start the 2022 campaign, and each of those wins came from ETSU.

TOP-10 INK

After last week’s match No. 5 with Horned Frogs, the Vols are preparing for their second top10 battle in Wake Forest’s tenth-place Demon Deacons. Last season, UT won twice in consecutive top 10 matches, first at the ITA Indoor National Championships in Champaign Ill., Defeating third-place TCU 4-3 and 5th Texas 4-2. on consecutive days. The Vols also won 8th place at Texas A&M 4-0 on April 11th and less than two weeks later in the best Florida 4-3 SEC Tournament Championship. Overall, Tennessee achieved five top-10 victories in the spring season of 2021.

The next event in Tennessee will take place at ITA Kickoff Weekend this Friday and Saturday, September 28-29. January at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville. The Vols will face Old Dominion on Friday and either Memphis or Western Michigan on Saturday. The team, which goes 2-0 this weekend, secures a spot in the ITA Indoor National Championships, which are set to play 18-21. February in Seattle, Wash.
