New York Giants would not switch to Deshaun Watson, but seek to “build a crime” around Daniel Jones

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The New York Giants don’t seem to be making major changes to the quarterback in 2022, and they certainly aren’t in the market for Deshaun Watson.

“We’re not replacing Deshaun Watson,” Giants co-owner John Mara said Wednesday after introducing Joe Schoen as the team’s new CEO. “We have so many reasons why we wouldn’t do it. We couldn’t afford it. [the acquisition]but most importantly, based on the current arguments, it just doesn’t suit us. “

Daniel Jones has been a New York quarterback for the past three seasons, but has struggled with injuries and inconsistent play since he was elected sixth in 2019.

Watson wants to be traded from Houston Texans, but he didn’t play this season after 22 civil lawsuits were filed against him for sexual violence and misconduct.

Schoen said Watson wasn’t even a topic he addressed during the interview process, almost as if he could see that Watson wasn’t interested in common sense.

Watson has a no-trade clause in the deal he signed with Houston in September 2020 and is set to earn a $ 35 million base salary next season.

“As for pay caps and pending legal issues, I don’t know how you can go down that road right now,” Schoen said.

The Giants are projected to exceed the $ 5 million salary cap next season, and Jones has a newcomer contract for at least another year.

Schoen and the new head coach, who is expected to be hired by the beginning of next week, will have to decide whether to exercise Jones ’fifth-year option for 2023. The Giants have until May to make a decision.

In the meantime, it looks like the Giants are committed to moving forward with Jones, who is in general proposition No. 6 of 2019. . .

Jones is expected to graduate medically well in time for the 2022 season, and Schoen sees enough potential to get him into the Giants ’plans.

“The child has physical abilities. He has arm power, he’s athletic, he can run,” Schoen said. “I’m really excited to be working with Daniel.

The Giants have reason to build around 24-year-old Jones, who has noticed the potential despite playing with insufficient support.

The Giants were in the NFL this season with a 28th pass pass percentage of 53.6%. Their starting suit, tight head and top four wide players all missed at least two games when they finished 31st.

The Giants organization still believes it will start its quarterback for most of the last three seasons.

“We feel like Daniel can play,” Mara said. “We have done everything we can to ruin this boy after he has been here.
