RPI women’s hockey won the Union and won the Mayor’s Cup – The Daily Gazette

ALBANY – The Union’s women’s hockey team did almost everything right against RPI in the fourth round of the Mayor’s Cup at the MVP Arena.

The Dutch beat the Engineers 32-27. They had a win 31-21. They were in a 5: 5 penalty shootout. The Union had six power-up attempts and 14 shots to finish with a player advantage.

But their failure to score in the powerhouse, combined with two late errors in the game, cost them a 2-0 loss on Saturday.

This is the third Mayor Cup win for Engineers (9-16-0), finishing the Dutch three-game season (4-22-1). RPI won 4-0 and 9-2 in ECAC Hockey in October.

“It’s a big difference, not just to take advantage of some opportunities,” Union head coach Josh Sciba said. – I really liked the way our girls played. I liked the way our team played. Apparently both goalkeepers played well. I thought our penalty kick was great. The game of power was a big difference. ”

Union striker Cassidy Michalicka believed the team did everything right, except for the goal.

“I think we mastered the puck really well,” Michalicka said. – I thought we created some really great places. Like Josh said, we just have to find a way to get the puck online.

RPI goalkeeper Amanda Rampado was strong to stop all shots, both in the power game and in the penalty kick.

“As we’ve been saying all year, the best penalty killer is usually your goalkeeper if you’re throwing,” RPI head coach Bryan Vines said. “Amanda had a great game for us again.”

“When you’re on a penalty kick, you always have to pick in,” said Rampado, who fought back 30 times in a 4-0 win on Oct. 8 at Messa Rink. “Of course I’m grateful to the players we have here too. We have a lot of players who put their bodies in line make good blocks and help me. All the credit goes to them too. “

The match seemed to go to extra time. But that changed at the end of the 2:12 episode.

Marah Wagner skated in front of the net from the right side. Goalkeeper Sophie Matsoukas stopped his first shot, but Wagner got the ball and ate it home 4:22 left.

“I knew I had to get it online somehow, even if it could get through a few bodies,” Wagner said. “The track was open to me, so all I knew was I had to take my body position in front of the net and get the puck in the net.”

Then, 2:10 left, Union defender Meredith Killian tried to shovel the puck under Matsoukas to get a stop. There was hesitation between the two players, allowing Asiah Taylor-Walters to pounce and put the puck into the net.

Matsoukas said there was miscommunication in the play.

“It’s happening,” Matsoukas said.
