The day after the women’s 9th place UVA tennis team reached the spot in next month’s ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Virginia’s 7th men’s tennis team secured its place in the ITA Indoors. The Cavaliers won Georgia Tech on Sunday 4-0 in the Boar’s Head Sports Club ITA Kickoff Weekend Championship.
UVA started the doubles strong, beating Inaki Montes and Ryan Goetz 6-2. Georgia Tech fought back when Chen Dong and Angel Guerrero defeated Virginia Bar Botzer and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg 6-2. The Cavaliers grabbed a double point with a 6-4 win over Chris Rodesch and William Woodall.
Gianni Ross had a good start in Virginia and knocked out Angel Guerrero 6-2, 6-2. Well. 66 Jeffrey von der Schulenburg followed it with Chen Dong 6-4, 6-0 and made it 3-0, giving the Cavaliers one win to win the match.
Virginia scored the last point on May 27 with Ryan Goetz, who defeated Pablo Schlecher 6-2, 6-2 to secure a win for UVA.
Virginia may have swept Georgia Tech, but the duel competition in the top three fields was tight. When Goetz finished his straight set win and finished the match, the other three active matches were in the middle of a hectic second set.
No. 71 Bar Botzer dropped his first set to Marcus McDaniel 3-6, and the second set was exactly 4-4 when the game was suspended. No. 52 Inaki Montes won the first set of Keshav Chopra 6-3 and there were up to four games in the second set when Goetz grabbed it for Virginia. In the end, No. 13 Chris Rodesch faced 9. Andres Martin on the No. 1 field in a showdown between the best single players. Martin won the first set 6-3, but Rodesch responded and won the second set 6-3. Virginia grabbed the win before the start of the third round and robbed the participants of the opportunity to see Rodesch and Martin finish their match.
With the win, Virginia improved to a 5-0 season and secured a bid for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on 18-21. February in Seattle, Washington. Both UVA’s men’s and women’s tennis teams have entered the ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the first time since 2016.
Next, Virginia will play a couple of out-of-conference matches against ranked opponents. The Cavaliers will play at 5th Ohio State on Friday and 11th in Kentucky on Sunday.
