Days after her first pair, ODI player of the year Alyssa Healy is facing the music after England sent Australia in to bat in their must-win Ashes match in Canberra.

Needing to win all three ODI matches to win the Ashes after falling inches short in last weekend’s Test, England sent Australia in at Manuka Oval.

The decision to do so paid off early, with opener Rachael Haynes out for four after top-edging a pull shot off swing bowler Anya Shrubsole.

Her early departure left Australia 1-13, which brought Captain Meg Lanning to the crease to join Healy.

But after Lanning steadied the ship with 28 off 51, her dismissal sparked an Aussie Collapse.

Lanning was clean bowled by a brilliant cutter from Kate Cross, which started outside off stump and nipped back in to take out middle and leg.

Ellyse Perry fell the next over for a golden duck, pushing at a Sophie Ecclestone ball to be dismissed caught and bowled. Then Alyssa Healey was stumped for 27 off 42 – meaning Australia had fallen from 1/60 to 4/67 – losing three wickets for just seven runs after 20.1 overs.

Australia somewhat bounced back through the efforts of Beth Mooney, who made 73 off 91 balls. But regular wickets through the middle and lower orders hampered the Australians who struggled at Manuka.

Australia finished its 50 overs with 9-205.

In reply, Aussie teen speedster Darcie Brown took two wickets on consecutive balls in the fourth over to remove Tammy Beaumont for 3 and the dangerous Heather Knight for a golden duck.

England is 5-91 after 24 overs.

Lauren Winfield-Hill was dismissed by Megan Schutt for 14 while Tahlia McGrath dismissed both Amy Jones (16) and Sophia Dunkley (5) in quick succession.

Jones’ dismissal caused a stir after she failed to dispatch a full toss, and isntead found Perry in the deep.

“Amy Jones, what are you doing?” Father Guha said in commentary. “England will not believe that.”

Mel Jones added: “I don’t know who looks more disappointed, Amy Jones or (batting partner) Nat Sciver.”

The wicket was not without controversy however as the third umpire tried to determine whether or not the delivery was over waist height. In the end, the replays were inconclusive and the wicket stood.

TEAM NEWS

Australia has made just one change to the Test side, with Annan Sutherland replacing Megan Shutt.

Alana King makes her debut in the ODI arena after impressing in her first Test, where the leg-spinner showed great control and spin in Australia’s dramatic draw to England in their Lone Test.

England, Meanwhile, have made just one change, with batter Danni Wyatt replacing Charlie Dean.

“The way we went at that Chase (in the Test) was awesome, real character from the girls,” Knight said on Wednesday.

“It’s shown that we can fight back and when we do go hard at them, than we can put them under pressure, and really create a few cracks.

“It gives us real confidence, especially that the second innings were very much like a one-day chase … we haven’t had a huge amount of time in the middle with the weather so that’s a really good sign.”

England trail Australia 6-4 in the series and must win all three one-dayers to regain the Trophy.

Australia have lost just one ODI since the last time the Ashes were held on home soil in 2017, with that defeat coming in their most recent game against India last September and ending a run of 26-straight victories.
