Justin Langer’s wait to find out that his future will last at least another day, Cricket Australia is set to start “confidential talks” with the coach after the marathon board meeting.
Langer’s role as an Australian coach formed a significant part of the eight-hour board meeting in Melbourne, and there has been speculation in recent months that his contract will not be renewed.
Despite recent strong field results, reports of game group dissatisfaction have left Langer’s position obscure.
Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley issued a brief statement and did not answer questions after the board meeting ended.
“Cricket Australia can confirm that the CA board met today and part of the meeting included significant discussions about the contract with men’s head coach Justin Langer.
“We are now entering into confidential discussions with Justin and the results will be announced as soon as possible,” he said.
Langer started as a coach after the Sandpaper Saga in 2018 and led the Australians to victory in the T20 World Cup and victory in Ashes over the past six months.
The 51-year-old man’s contract is due to expire in June.
The board meeting was held a month before the first day of Australia’s next test match against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.
Earlier in the day, England coach Chris Silverwood resigned after his team’s 4-0 Ashes.
