2022 Winter Olympics – US Women’s Ice Hockey Cuts ROC, Jamie Anderson Moves to Slopesty and Increases Operations from Beijing

The 2022 Winter Olympics are officially underway in Beijing. The opening began with a celebration, and the first day of operation saw some shocks and major finishes.

American Jamie Anderson started his three peat attempt at the women’s snowboard slopestyle and reached the finals with teammates Hailey Langland and Julia Marino.

Snowboard legend Shaun White announced that these would be his last Olympics. The 35-year-old has three Olympic gold medals and 18 personal Winter X Games medals.

“I’m nibbling on myself, how lucky I am that I’m still here at this age,” he said.

The United States controls the ROC in hockey

Team The U.S. women’s hockey team won the Russian Olympic Committee 5-0 in the second round of the Olympic tournament.

Hilary Knight’s goal at 8:51 for the second set gave Team USA a critical respite from the ROC, boosting their lead 2-0 despite beating their opponents 36-6 after two sets. Grace Zumwinkle’s goal 3:57 for the third installment allowed them to breathe.

ROC goalkeeper Maria Sorokina held her team in two games against Team USA. But the Americans opened the flood gates in the third period and scored three goals at 4:47 to gain control of a game that had been closer than many had expected. The US won the 5-0 ROC 60-12.

Shock to the moguls

Sweden’s Walter Wallberg was shocked at the men’s moguls as he overtook his favorite Canadian Mikael Kingsbury and took gold on Saturday. Japan’s Ikuma Horishima won the bronze.

Wallberg, 21, made the final run of the day and had to improve on Kingsbury’s score of 82.18. Kingsbury had won gold at Pyeongchang in 2018, but Wallberg made a lofty run to a record 83.23 and dropped the Canadian to No. 1.

It was a major achievement for Wallberg, who suffered a serious cross-linking injury just two years ago. It was feared at the time that his career would end, but he fought back only to tear his meniscus. American biker Elana Meyers Taylor has been isolated after being twice negative for the COVID-19 test, he told NBC’s Today Show.

Meyers Taylor was originally supposed to carry the U.S. flag at the opening ceremony, but the test result was positive on January 29 and he was isolated. He has won medals in the last three Winter Olympics and is looking for gold in a monobob.

Prior to the announcement, Meyers Taylor presented his internship in his hotel room.

Redemption of Slopestyle

Jamie Anderson began his bid for the third tube of snowboarding slopestyle gold on Saturday morning in Beijing, leading three American women to Sunday’s finals, finishing fifth in the qualifiers. Double Olympics Julia Marino (sixth) and Hailey Langland (ninth) join Anderson’s 12 women’s finals.

“I wanted to qualify for a higher one, but I’ll take what I can,” Anderson told NBC shortly after his second run. “The course is really challenging, and the young girls have motivated me and made me work harder. I’m trying to be really proud of myself for being just here.”

However, the story of the Beijing slopestyle does not apply to any of the women. It’s about redemption for every competitor. Four years ago, women fell on the Pyeongchang course under deceptive circumstances. Strong, gusty winds made it difficult for riders to try their biggest tricks, and few women got to the full run. The sport had evolved so much in the four years since its debut in Sochi, but the competition did not show this development.

That changed on Saturday. Although the women did not throw their biggest tricks and saved them for Sunday, their riding was already much better than what they were able to do on the South Korean track.

The New England Patriots and Boston College Eagles backed the Olympics with ties to the region. Among them is BC class Alex Carpenter, who was part of the 2014 hockey team that won a silver medal in Sochi.

Team USA wants to defend their gold medal for the 2018 Games, which faced rival Canada in overtime.
