Sooners deserves a commitment from elite WR for 2023

Two days after completing its class in 2022, Oklahoma football recruitment added an elite-wide receiver for 2023.

Four star wide receiver Ashton Cozart committed to the Sooners event on Friday. He is the only broad receiver in the Sooners ’2023 class and Crimson and Cream’s fourth commitment. The addition of Cozart, who was present last weekend on an OU recruitment visit, will help fill the loss of DeAndre Moore, one of the top 50 broad recipients, who resigned a week ago.

Cozart, a flower mound from the North Dallas suburb, is 6 feet 3 inches tall and has excellent speed for its size, a couple of features that should work well in Sooners ’attack plans for years to come.

Cozart’s Scout Book says he used his body and length to get up and grab high-pitched passes out of reach of smaller defenders, and his ability to make tacklers fail after predation creates opportunities for big play.

After a second season when he was sidelined due to injuries, Cozart returned last season with 36 catches of 680 yards received and 11 touchdowns. And it is worth noting that he achieved this in a running-off crime.

Cozart announced his commitment decision on social media. He chose Sooners over Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M and TCU and other offers.

The Oklahoma 2023 class, once the top class before Lincoln Riley left for USC and several previous OU commitments changed its mind, is currently four. Cozart’s commitment is the second one Brent Venables and his staff have received this week. Erik McCarty, a three-star, state runner from McAlester, announced his commitment to the Sooners last weekend while attending OU Junior Weekend.

Cozart and McCarty will join four-star quarterback Jackson Arnold, who is committed to Jan. 24, and offensive lineman Joshua Bates, who has been committed since last August.
