GRAND FORKS, ND – The Bemidji State Women’s tennis team split its opening weekend in the spring season in Grand Forks, ND The Beavers fell 4-3 to St. Cloud State on Saturday but defeated Minnesota Duluth 6-1 on Sunday.
In Saturday’s match against SCSU, BSU swept doubles play with wins from Sophie Groen and Shaelyn Johnson at No. 1; Nico Anestiadi and Laney Rutkowski at No. 2; and Isabela Nelson and Lexi Leitner at No. 3. However, the Huskies won four of six singles matchups to take the match 4-3.
Against the Bulldogs on Sunday, Bemidji State found more success.
Groen won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Johnson backed her up with a smooth 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2. Anestiads (6-1, 6-1), Rutkowski (6-3, 6-1) and Lily Jones (6-0, 6-3) were respective winners at Nos. 3, 4, and 6 singles.
In the doubles play, the Groen-Johnson combo won 6-1 at the top spot while Anestiadi and Rutkowski prevailed 6-2 at No. 2 to clinch the doubles team point.
The Beavers moved to 3-1 on the season, including 1-1 in conference play, after the weekend wrapped up.
BSU is back in action against Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota State on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12-13, in Owatonna.
