Ranking the college football rosters for the 2022 season provides a unique window into the Talent level for all teams and how that Compares to win totals, conference Championships, and success on a national level. Recruiting is the foundation for winning national championships, competing for CFB Playoff berths or Performing at a high level in college football. While recruiting rankings aren’t 100 percent accurate, there is plenty of truth in the rankings and evaluations by the experts. Additionally, with Advances in technology to watch more prospects, along with more offseason Camps, the rankings for prospects and classes as a whole are more accurate than they were just a few years ago. Also, the transfer Portal and change in Eligibility rules have allowed all teams another avenue to add more Talent to the roster. Bolstering the roster with transfers is now a key cog in the Chase for a Championship, but now programs will always build through the freshman Ranks.

Since the start of the CFB Playoff era, all seven Champions have come from teams ranked inside the top seven in overall roster talent. It’s no secret what a program needs in order to win big at this level. Great coaching, support staff, state-of-the-art training facilities and luck certainly helps, but Talent on the roster (and player development) provides a significant head start in the race to win it all each season.

Below are the national recruiting ranking averages for the Power 5 schools, Notre Dame and BYU over the last five classes according to 247Sports Team Composite rankings and each team’s record over the last five seasons. Obviously, this doesn’t take into account attrition. However, with a five-year window in place, this should be considered relatively even across the conference.

* Notre Dame played as a member of the ACC during the 2020 Pandemic-impacted season.

* SEC teams average a 20.5 finish in the national recruiting rankings going into 2022. That’s the best mark among conferences, and there’s a significant gap to the Big Ten at No. 2 (34.4). Not much separates the ACC (40.4), Big 12 (40.6), and Pac-12 (41.8).

* Six SEC teams rank among the top 15, including Alabama and Georgia – the two teams that played for the 2021 national championship – tied at no. 1 with a 2.2 average over the last five years.

* Among Power 5 teams, Washington (No. 32) and Michigan State (tied for No. 34) are the lowest to earn a trip to the CFB Playoff since its Inception in 2014.

* LSU at No. 7 is the lowest team to win a national championship during the CFB Playoff era.

* The ACC has only four teams inside the top 20 in roster Talent – Clemson, Miami, North Carolina and Florida State. The next ACC team doesn’t appear until No. 39 in NC State.

* In 2018, Florida State ranked as the No. 1 roster in the ACC and No. 4 overall nationally. Going into ’22, the Seminoles have dropped to No. 4 in the conference and No. 18 nationally.

* Oklahoma and Texas combined for 35 four- or five-star prospects in the ’22 signing class. The other eight teams in the Big 12 combined for just 16. Also, the Sooners and Longhorns are the only Big 12 teams inside the top 25 nationally in roster Talent. Oklahoma State Ranks third at No. 30 overalls.

* Texas has signed four classes ranked inside of the top eight over the last five years. However, the Longhorns are only 25-19 in the Big 12 play since ’17.

* Nebraska’s Well. 41 class in ’22 is its lowest over the last five years. However, the Cornhuskers still rank No. 4 overall in the Big Ten and No. 1 in the West Division in roster Talent.

* Only two Pac-12 teams (Oregon and Stanford) rank inside the top 25 nationally in roster Talent.

* Prior to the 2018 season, USC ranked No. 5 nationally and No. 1 in the Pac-12. However, due to classes ranked No. 65 (’22) and No. 64 (’20) the Trojans have tumbled to No. 26 nationally and third in the Pac-12. The No. 65 ranking this year is a little misleading since it doesn’t include transfers, but don’t expect USC to finish this low in recruiting once again under new Coach Lincoln Riley.

* TCU inked the No. 25, no. 31 and No. 24 classes from 2018-20. However, the Horned Frogs have slipped to No. 53 and No. 44 over the last two years.

* Indiana’s Well. 21 class in ’22 was the best in school history.

* Arizona’s Well. 24 Haul in ’22 was easily the best for the program since ’18. Prior to the No. 24 finish, the Wildcats’ best ranking in that period was No. 56 in ’19.

* Only one Big Ten team (Rutgers) has fewer conference wins than Maryland since ’17. However, the Terrapins are reeling in Talent on the recruiting trail under Coach Mike Locksley, as the Roster Ranks No. 5 in the Big Ten and No. 25 nationally going into ’22.

* Kentucky (No. 13 nationally) and Missouri (No. 14) for ’22 were the highest-ranked classes in school history. Going into the ’17 season, Kentucky ranked No. 33 in the roster rankings. However, the Wildcats have climbed to No. 23 for ’22, while Missouri has moved into a tie for 30^th.

* North Carolina’s roster Talent has increased under Mack Brown. The Tar Heels ranked No. 27 in roster rankings in 2018 but have jumped to No. 17 going into ’22.

* Wake Forest does not have a class ranked higher than No. 59 over the last five years, but Coach Dave Clawson’s team is tied for third among now overall wins in the ACC since ’18.

* After reeling in the No. 27 class in ’20, Georgia Tech has trended down to No. 48 and No. 53 over the last two years.

* Greg Schiano has signed the No. 33 (’22) and No. 39 (’21) classes at Rutgers. Those two hauls are significantly better than the previous three years, which did not rank higher than No. 56 nationally.

* UCLA’s roster Talent is trending down. The Bruins tied for No. 16 prior to ’18 but have slipped to No. 36 going into ’22.

* Texas Tech’s Well. 43 class in ’22 is its best over the last five seasons.

* Roster Talent is also on the rise at Boston College. The Eagles did not ink a class higher than No. 62 from 2018-20, but Coach Jeff Hafley Landed the No. 37 Haul in ’21 and No. 40 this year.

* Utah’s roster Talent has increased by nearly 10 spots since ’18. The Utes rank No. 33 nationally and have climbed to No. 5 in the Pac-12.

* Arizona State (No. 108) and Kansas (No. 121) were the lowest-rated recruiting classes by Power 5 teams in 2022. Those totals do not indicate transfers, as both teams dipped Heavily into the Portal.

* All 14 SEC teams signed classes in the top 32 nationally this year.
