Monadnock Ledger-Transcript – Girls’ tennis: Conant wins opener, WLC improving

The Conant and Wilton-Lyndeborough girls’ tennis teams started their NHIAA spring seasons Monday, with the Orioles winning in a shutout over Stevens and the Warriors unable to score a point of their own against Trinity.

Conant got off to a great start with their 9-0 win over Stevens Monday, as the young Orioles debuted in new spots on the ladder with success.

Sophomore Bella Hart won 8-0 at No. 1; junior Kelly Williams won 8-0 at No. 2; freshman Jess Yap won 8-1 at No. 3; junior Lily Rennie won 8-3 at No. 4; sophomore Grace Lewis won 8-2 at No. 5, and senior Kaia Colby won by default at No. 6, since Stevens only brought five players.

Hart and Yap teamed up for an 8-1 doubles win, as did Williams and Rennie.

Conant (1-0) was scheduled to play at Kearsarge Wednesday, weather permitting, and at Trinity Friday.

WLC once again enters their season with only five players on the roster, which means they’ll come into every match down at least two points. The Warriors started out with a 9-0 loss to Trinity Monday and then another 9-0 loss to Pelham Tuesday, although Coach Fran Bujak got his girls improved from match to match.

Well. 1 Elisabeth Jacob and No. 2 Erin McDonald both played well in their singles matches, losing each 8-4, and then teamed up for another 8-4 loss in doubles.

The Warriors also field returning players Senja Sours and Madeleine Straw, as well as seventh-grader Jodi Gibson, who is working her way into a full roster spot.

WLC is at Monadnock Thursday and hosts Conant Monday.
