History Made! Wolverines Win B1G Tournament Championship

MADISON, Wis. – The University of Michigan men’s tennis team is the 2022 Big Ten Tournament Champion! The Wolverines won their first-ever Big Ten tournament title with a 4-2 win over Rival and top-seeded Ohio State, claiming the Victory on Sunday (May 1) at the Nielson Tennis Center.

Michigan has been the runner-up three times since the tournament began in 1999. This is the third time the Wolverines have faced OSU in the title match. UM will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Wolverines battled back after dropping the doubles point for just the fourth time this season. Despite not winning the point, No. 36-ranked Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider handed the No. 1-ranked duo of Matej Vocel and Robert Cash in a 6-3 loss, the pair’s fourth loss on the season.

UM began its comeback in singles, as Ehrenschneider put the Bread and Blue on the board at No. 5, taking down Robert Cash in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

All eyes were on the back three courts as Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty were both in tie-breaker sets. Maloney fell behind in the first set to Vocel but quickly knotted things up. At 5-5, Maloney won the next game and went up 5-1 in the tiebreaker before the 7-2 score gave him the first-set win. He was in full control of the second set, taking a 3-1 lead before finishing it off 6-4.

On the next court over, Beaty went back-and-Forth with No. 42-ranked James Trotter. Tied at 5-5, Beaty won his next two games to take the 7-5 win. The second set was much the same with each trading points to the tiebreaker. Beaty fought back from an 0-4 deficit in the tiebreaker to win the next four points and seven of the final eight to take the match and put Michigan ahead, 3-1.

OSU grabbed a point at No. 3 as No. 21 JJ Tracy won 7-6 (7), 6-4 over No. 63 Andrew Fentyto make it a one-point match in the team score at 3-2.

On the first court, No. 30 Ondrej Styler and No. 10 Cannon Kingsley had traded sets as Kingsley won 7-5 before Styler took a 7-6 (7-2) win in the second set. Exchanging games, Styler won two straight to make it 5-3, one game away from Victory. Kingsley came back to take the next game to make it 5-4 and still left Styler with room to win in one game and he did just that, taking the 6-4 Victory as the team stormed the court. Styler was named MVP and was named All-Tournament, along with Maloney.

Well. 61 Jacob Bickersteth rallied to win the second set and forced a third set as well. He took a 2-0 lead before Jake Van Emburgh won two games to tie it at 2-2 before leaving it 3-3 Unfinished.

The NCAA Selection Show will be at 6 pm ET on Monday (May 2) at NCAA.com. The first and second rounds are slated for May 6-7 at campus sites.
