BIG RAPIDS – Big Rapids girls varsity tennis team took second place at the Lakes 8 Conference tournament in Ludington on Friday. All the doubles teams won their first-round and all but No. 3 singles won their first rounds too.
Addison Mossel, lost in the Finals 2-6, 2-6 to Ludington at No. 1, Sabina Walker lost in the Finals against Ludington 0-6, 2-6, at No. 2, Brenna Mossel lost in the Finals at No. 3 5-7,3-6, Cortney Myers / Kara Paquette lost in the Finals against Muskegon Catholic Central 1-6,2-6 after they upset the No. 1 seed from Ludington.
Aliyah Glentz / Emily Beemer (No. 3) lost in the Finals against Ludington 0-6, 5-7, and Rebecca Myers / Ava Schneider lost at four doubles to Ludington 3-6, 6-7.
“I was happy with their performance yesterday,” Big Rapids Coach Renee Kent said. “We knew Ludington was a good team and wanted to be competitive with them. Our No. 1 doubles team upset them which was a big win for them.
“We’re wrapping up our season this week with a couple more meets and Regionals on Friday in Grand Rapids.”
GIRLS SOCCER
Newaygo 7, Chippewa Hills 1
Chippewa Hills fell to 4-11 overall and 0-8 in the Central State Activities Association with this loss to Newaygo on Friday.
“We had a strong defensive played by Madison Brewer and Hayley Gomber,” Chippewa Hills Coach Jay Franks said. “The goal was defended by Karley Densmore who had 23 saves. Karley now has 268 saves in the year which qualifies her for the top six in the MHSAA record book for most saves in a season. She needs 250 to qualify.
“Offensively, Melinda Burgess had our goal Tonight. That marks her 20 goals on the season. We battled through many adversities Tonight and played until the end. We were trying to compete, but unfortunately we were not able to keep pace with them. ”
Chippewa Hills is home against Hart on Monday at 7 p.m.
“This is an add-on game since we didn’t qualify for the CSAA tournament,” Franks said.
CLARIFICATION
The headline in Saturday’s sports section on Fischer Morrison should have read “Reed City golfer to try out for Ferris State’s men’s team.” He has to try out before he makes the team.
