Men’s Tennis Holds Awards Luncheon

Bronx, NY – The Fordham men’s tennis Squad Hosted its end of season Awards luncheon at MichaelAngelo’s Pizza & Restaurant on Arthur Avenue this past Thursday where Seniors were recognized, and three members were honored for their Athletic accomplishments in 2021-2022 .

“Our final Awards luncheon is always very bittersweet. The team faced a lot of adversity this year but they all continued to work hard and I’m incredibly proud of how the guys stayed united as a unit and finished the season strong. The culture of the program is very much intact and I’m so Thankful to all the Seniors for their leadership and Dedication and excited for the future of Fordham men’s tennis, “said Director of Tennis Michael Sowter.

The Spirit Awardwhich is given to the student-athlete that demonstrates sportsmanship, leadership, motivation and Integrity, was awarded to senior Jofre Segarra. Jofre served as the men’s tennis team Captain, tied for the most wins on the season with a 9-5 record, and was recently awarded the MVP Award at Block F. He also interned with the Strength & Conditioning department and will be graduating with honors. from the Gabelli School of Business.

Senior Tom Russwurm received the team’s Most Improved Player Award. During the 2020-21 season, Tom played primarily at the bottom of the lineup in singles and doubles. This year, Tom made significant strides in his game and worked his way to the # 1 position, including wins over Lafayette and the Holy Cross and splitting sets with Kaipo Marshall from Duquesne at the A10 Championships.

The Player of the Year Award was presented to junior Toi Kobayashi. In his first season with the Rams, the transfer played predominantly at the No. 4 position, ending the year with a team-best record of 9-4 in singles and paired the entire season with Jofre Segarra to win seven matches in doubles. Kobayashi had notable wins over Navy and Siena in singles, Brown in doubles, and was also in the third set at the Atlantic 10 Championships before the match was halted.
