The Dow Highs girls tennis team ended up fourth out of 27 teams at the Division 1 state final in Kalamazoo on Friday.
Ann Arbor Pioneer won the team state Championship with 33 points, while Bloomfield Hills was a close second with 32 points, Troy finished third with 22 points, and the Chargers who entered the second day of the competition tied with Novi finished with 15 points.
Laura Leitis Victory in the No. 2 singles semifinals on Friday gave Dow the point it needed to finish in Sole possession of fourth place, one point ahead of Novi.
Today was a good day for our team. Although we only won one match, our three losses were to Bloomfield Hills and Pioneer. Pioneer swept all four singles flights, and Bloomfield Hills swept all four doubles, so our losses were to the best in the division, said Dow Coach Garrett Turner.
Found beat Port Huron Northern 6-1, 7-5 in the semifinals before falling to Pioneer in the Championship match.
Also competing on Friday for the Chargers, Claire Earley lost to Pioneer 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles semifinals, while Ayesha Middha and Mallory Matthews lost to Bloomfield Hills 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 doubles semifinals.
Claire had Moments in her match where she was putting great shots together. She played some great tennis, but the Pioneer girl was just very consistent and strong, Turner noted. Laura had a great first match and was overpowered in the first set of the final. She was playing fairly well, but the Pioneer girl was just playing perfect tennis.
Laura played some of the best tennis of her career to start the second set, and it got her a 3-2 lead, but she just had a hard time sustaining that level of play, Turner added. Pioneer handled everything Laura did and made very few Mistakes. (Middha and Matthews) played well and had many very close games. They played well, but Bloomfield Hills is an incredibly tough and consistent team.
Considering how many new faces the Chargers had in their lineup this season, Turner said he was incredibly proud of how they performed.
This was a total team effort, and we are thrilled to finish in Sole possession of fourth place, he said.
DOW SOCCER BLANKED BY TCW IN DISTRICT FINAL
A great season came to an end for the Dow Highs girls soccer team on Friday, as host Traverse City West shut out the Chargers 2-0 in a Division 1 district final.
The Titans scored a Breakaway goal in the third minute, then added an insurance goal in the 73rdrd minute for the final margin. Dow ends at 16-2-2 after winning the Saginaw Valley League Championship for the first time in eight years.
“It’s never easy for the season to end, but I couldn’t be prouder of the team. Tonight just wasn’t our night, said Chargers Coach Spencer Sandow. The ladies have a lot to be proud of, as they won 16 games this spring and finished as the SVL Champions.In the moment, it stings.But they accomplished great things this year.
I would like to thank my seven Seniors – Maddy Estes, Jordan Danna, Lucy Teed, Tristan Luick, Bizzy Haydanek, Hannah Redman, and Kennedy Caldwell – for everything they’ve given to the soccer program and the opportunity to Coach them the past two years, Sandow added. All the ladies (did) a great job of getting this program competing for Championships year in and year out, and I couldn’t be prouder to be their Coach. “
MIDLAND TENNIS FINISHES 17TH AT STATE
Midland Highs girls tennis season came to an end Friday at the Division 2 state tournament held in the Holland area.
The Chemics were tied for 17th place out of 22 teams with two points following Fridays first day of competition.
Midlands Lone win on the day came at No. 2 doubles, where Abby Carroll and Sofia Sanchez had a bye, then beat St. Joseph 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 before falling to the Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern 6-0, 6-0 in the third round.
In singles for the Chemics, Dalton DeBoer had a bye, then lost to Holly 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the first flight; Riley Penwell lost to Grosse Pointe North 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of the second flight; Brooklyn Moore had a bye, then lost to Birmingham Groves 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the third flight; and Ale Brenes lost to Portage Central 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of the fourth flight.
In doubles, Allison Stiffler and Emma Buschlen lost to South Lyon 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the first flight; Cheryl Fritz and Avery Miller had a bye, then lost to Temperance Bedford 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round of the third flight; and Chloe Nieto and Lauren McGuirk had a bye, then lost to Groves 6-2, 6-2 in the second round of the fourth flight.
LANCERS END HISTORIC SEASON WITH 19TH-PLACE FINISH
Bullock Creek concluded its best girls tennis season in program history on Friday by finishing 19thth out of 26 teams with three points after the first day of competition at the Division 4 state tournament held in Ann Arbor.
Earning points for the Lancers were Adreannah Diamond at No. 3 singles, Taylor Mathey at No. 4 singles, and Autumn Brown and Emma Stern at No. 2 doubles.
Diamond beat Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 7-5, 7-5 in the first round, then lost to Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett 6-3, 6-1 in the second round; Mathey beat Wixom St. Catherine 6-3, 7-5 in the first round, then lost to Bloomfield Academy of the Sacred Heart 6-1, 6-1 in the second round; and Brown and Stern beat Brooklyn Columbia Central 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 in the first round, then lost to Sacred Heart 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.
Also for Creek, Hillary Anderson lost to Niles Brandywine 6-1, 6-2 in the first round at No. 1 singles; Ashlyn McDonald had a bye, then lost to St. Catherine 6-2, 6-4 in the second round at No. 2 singles; Allison McMan and Kaylee Hillard lost to Clarkston Everest Collegiate 6-0, 6-1 in the first round at No. 1 doubles; Kailee Parsons and Emma Somerville lost to Jackson Lumen Christi 7-6 (1), 6-1 in the first round at No. 3 doubles; and Hannah Rivard and Hanna Somerville had a bye, then lost to Brandywine 6-1, 6-4 in the second round at No. 4 doubles.
With this being our first state tournament, our girls exceeded our expectations, said Lancers Coach Darren Kalina. All the girls played well, and we will have learned how hard it is to get here and what we need to do to improve.
