Phoenix Xavier College Prep girls tennis Coach Laurie Martin, who led the Gators to five state Championships between 2012 and 2019, died on Monday from a fall in Show Low, Athletic Director Sister Lynn Winsor said.
She was 58.
Winsor said that Martin suffered a traumatic brain injury and was air-evacuated to Chandler Regional Medical Center.
Martin led Xavier Prep’s tennis program for the past 17 years. Last year, she won the Pro of the Year for the Southwest Division of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).
Her overall record was 274-17 at Xavier. In 2016, she was The Arizona Republic’s Tennis Coach of the Year.
She started the no-cut program at Xavier for tennis 10 years ago.
“Every year we have from 80 to 90 girls starting in August out there learning the basics of tennis,” Winsor said. “She initiated that program and it’s been wonderful. Kids who usually don’t make another team, she and her assistants had them out there. They were learning the game. More important than that, they were socializing with each other and making friends.
“Those were her goals. Learn tennis and make friends and being loving companions to each other. She was good at that. She always had the kids first. Winning for her was never the objective. It was a team that loved and cared for each other and loved their school. She did a great job. “
Xavier Prep sent a release on Martin’s death to the media on Tuesday morning.
Martin leaves behind her beloved husband, Stan, daughters Amanda, Courtney and Natalie and son Tanner. Her daughters all graduated from Xavier, and her son graduated from Phoenix Brophy Prep.
