IRVING, Texas A total of 129 student-athletes from all 10 Big 12 schools will be competing in the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship meet at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon this week from Wednesday through Saturday.
Eight men finished as top Qualifiers in the West Preliminaries. Baylors Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi dominated the javelin throw with an 81.22-meter throw that set a Baylor and Nigerian record.
Texas sprinter Jonathan Jones led in the 400 meters, recording the fastest time of the quarterfinal at 44.85. He then joined Jon Maas, Willington Wright and Brian Herron in the 4×400-meter relay to run the fastest time out of the west at 3: 00.71 to break another Texas record.
In the shot put, fellow Longhorn Adrian Piperi launched the best throw of the prelims with a mark of 20.74 meters. Kansas junior Zach Bradford was the top qualifier in the mens pole vault with a leap of 5.39 meters, which he cleared on his first attempt.
Texas Techs Moad Zahafi posted the best time in the 800-meters at 1: 44.65, which is the fourth all-time in TTU history. The grad student is one of two Red Raiders to run sub-1:45 in the event.
TCUs Chengetayi (Du) Mapaya qualified for his fourth NCAA outdoor Championship with a leap of 17.07 meters in the triple jump which gave him the top mark in the NCAA and places him at No. 7 in the world.
Kansas States Tejaswin Shankar and Oklahoma Vernon Turner tied for the top marks in the mens high jump, posting marks of 2.18 meters.
On the Womens side, Texas continued to set the standard. Julien Alfred was one of four women to run a sub-10.9 at the West Prelims, blazing through the 100 meters in 10.80 seconds. Texas Techs Rosemary Chukwuma was right on her trail at 10.82.
Kynnedy Flannel was the top qualifier in the 200 meters, running the fastest time of the prelims at 22.40. Her teammate Kevona Davis followed right behind her at 10:49 PM.
Ackelia Smith took over the Collegiate record in the triple jump with a leap of 14.08 meters on her second attempt, which set a West Prelims record.
TTUs Chloe Wall led in the Womens pole vault, topping out at 4.21 meters, punching her ticket to the national outdoor meet for the first time in her four years with the Red Raiders.
The men kick off at 2:30 pm CT on Wednesday with decathlon action, which will conclude on Thursday. Finals for the mens field events will begin at 4 pm CT. Semifinals for the running events are set to begin at 6:32 pm CT with the final for mens 10,000 meters scheduled for 9:08 pm CT.
The women will begin competition on Thursday with field event Finals beginning at 5 pm CT. Running event semifinals are set to start at 7:32 pm CT with the Womens 10,000 meters taking place at 10:08 pm
