The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is looking back at some of the best Moments throughout the 2021-22 season every #ThrowbackThursday (#TBT) through August.
RIO GRANDE VALLEY The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros Women’s tennis team got off to a hot start in Western Athletic Conference play with a couple of tight wins over Sam Houston and Abilene Christian.
The Vaqueros were riding a two-match win streak after defeating Omaha and NJIT and their first conference opponent was Sam Houston, who was hosting the first WAC Cluster of the season.
UTRGV got out to the early lead by taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, but Sam Houston came Roaring back with victories on singles courts No. 1, no. 3, and No. 6 as they took the 3-1 advantage.
Stefanie Wilske won at No. 5 after coming back from a 2-6 loss in the first set, dominating the second 6-3 and the third 6-0. Barbara Martinez won in straight sets at No. 4 to tie the match at 3-3.
It all came down to Marjorie Souza, who had won earlier with Martinez in doubles, at the No. 2 spots. Souza dropped the first set 3-6 but bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second.
In the third set, Souza jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and endured some lengthy rallies to come away with the 6-3 win, giving UTRGV the 4-3 Victory and their third straight win.
The next day, the Vaqueros went toe-to-toe with Abilene Christian.
The Vaqueros won their third straight doubles point and 10thof the season as they took matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Wilske cruised to her third consecutive Victory at the No. 5 singles spot to put UTRGV up 2-0.
The Wildcats answered with wins at No. 1 and No. 5 spots to even up the match at 2-2 before Martinez gave UTRGV the lead once again with a straight set Victory at the No. 4 spots.
It came down to the No. 2 and No. 3 spots as Souza came away with a straight set Victory at No. 2 to clinch the win once again for the Vaqueros.
The win extended their win streak to four and marked their 10thwin of the season.
It was a huge opening weekend for the Vaqueros. After being selected to finish sixth in the Southwest Division in the pre-conference polls, the Vaqueros came away with wins over both teams who were picked to finish ahead of them.
