Cooper Named to 2022 Hermann Trophy Watch List

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The United Soccer Coaches announced Thursday that Duke Women’s soccer standout Michelle Cooper was one of 61 student-athletes named to the 2022 Hermann Trophy Watch list.

Cooper, the 2021 TopDrawerSoccer National and ACC Freshman of the Year, is coming off a season where she led Duke with 12 goals and 29 points, while tying for second with five assists. Her 12 goals were a Blue Devil freshman record. She became the first Duke player to score six goals over her first six career matches and went on to be a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.

A native of Clarkston, Mich., Cooper also became the first freshman in program history to earn All-America status and was the only newcomer listed on last year’s first team. She was the 16th Duke All-American since 1992 (20 total honors). Cooper registered at least one point in 14 of her 18 matches played as a rookie.

The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation’s highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.

Fifteen Women’s players will become Hermann Trophy Semifinalists on Nov. 30, following completion of Division I All-America voting following the fall season. Then on Dec. 7, the top three players from a final round of voting are the 2022 finalists. The 2022 Winner will be Revealed on Jan. 6, 2023, at a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.

Cooper recently represented the United States at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica. Duke will open the 2022 regular season Thursday, Aug. 18 at East Carolina in Greenville, NC The game is slated to start at 7 pm, and aired live on ESPN+.
