Resurgent men’s soccer, field hockey lead the way

With the fall season about one month in, Maryland’s Olympic sports have mostly completed non-conference play and are moving into facing Big Ten foes. Across multiple sports, the Terps have been able to put together upsets and generate excitement for an all-around positive month of action. Here’s a look at where those teams stand.

Men’s soccer

Well. 5 Maryland men’s soccer has been on a bit of a resurgent path after a disappointing end to the 2021 season that saw the Terps knocked out of the NCAA Tournament at home by Long Island University.

The Terps started off 2022 with a bang, upsetting then-No. 9 New Hampshire at Ludwig Field, 2-1. With a road win against Michigan to start Big Ten play, Maryland sits at 4-1-1 with its lone loss coming at home to No. 20 Denver.

This week: Sept. 20 vs No. 18 Penn State, Sept. 25 vs No. 13 Ohio State

Field hockey

Last week: W @ No. 23 Ohio State

After a heartbreaking Final Four loss to Liberty in 2021, Maryland field hockey has continued on its path to a first national championship since 2011.

The Terps are a perfect 7-0 to start the 2022 season with four wins against ranked opponents already. This weekend, the team battled back from a slow first half to pull out a massive road victory against Ohio State to remain perfect. Maryland currently Ranks No. 4 in the NFHCA Coaches Poll and No. 5 in RPI, where the Big Ten holds the top six spots nationally.

Women’s soccer

Last week: D vs Saint Joseph’s (0-0), W vs Michigan (1-0)

It was a slow start but consistent start to the 2022 season for Maryland Women’s soccer under head Coach Meghan Ryan-Nemzer. The Terps opened with four consecutive 1-1 draws before finally getting in the win column during a 3-0 home match against George Mason.

Maryland put forth a good effort in a 1-0 loss against No. 24 Wake Forest earlier this month and was able to notch its first Victory in Big Ten play since 2019 with Friday’s 1-0 Victory over Michigan, moving to 2-1-5 on the season with only conference matchups remaining.

Volleyball

Last week: W vs Mercer (3-1), W vs East Carolina (3-0), W vs Virginia (3-0)

Maryland volleyball finished its non-conference schedule this weekend with a sweep of three matches at Virginia’s Cavalier Classic, taking down Mercer, East Carolina and Virginia by a combined 9-1 mark. The weekend sweep marks the first of the season for Maryland, which sports a 9-3 record with each loss coming in the final matchup of each weekend event so far this season.

The Terps have yet to face a ranked opponent, but will get to do so next time out, facing No. 25 Illinois on the road on Friday. Big Ten play will provide plenty of tough tests, as the team has 11 matchups against teams ranked in the latest top-25 poll.

Golf

Last week: 2nd place @ Yale Invitational (Women’s), T16th of 18 @ Badger Invitational (Men’s)

Maryland Women’s golf started its season strong last weekend as junior Patricie Mackova captured the individual title at the Yale Invitational and helped the Terps clinch second as a team. Mackova shot a three-round, eight-under-par 205 (70-68-67) en route to the title, beating second place’s Meiyi Yan of Harvard by three strokes.

Maryland men’s golf had a rough start to its 2022-23 campaign as the Badger Invitational suffered a first-day rainout, shortening the tournament from 54 to 36 holes. Senior Will Koras finished tied for 16th individually (Out of 90 golfers), posting back-to-back 71 scorecards in the shortened event, but the Terps finished tied for 16th out of 18 teams when all was final.
