The Third Dr. Efunkoya National Junior Table Tennis Championships will begin at the National Stadium, Lagos, on September 29 and end on October 1, the organizers have said.
The event, which is being used to discover young talents, is then the baby of Dr. Efunkoya Foundation in honor of the former chairman of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), the late Dr. Adegboyega Efunkoya.
Athletes featuring in the Championships are expected to arrive in Lagos tomorrow for the three-day event, the organizers said.
According to the organizers, the Championships emphasis is on the need for youngsters to also focus on their education, hence the need to provide educational scholarships for each of the winners in the boys and girls singles categories.
To encourage more players to feature in the tournament, the organizers are providing accommodation and feeding for most of the participants, as they compete for five titles, including singles (boys and girls), doubles (boys and girls) and mixed doubles events.
Former players and lovers of table tennis within and outside the country are bankrolling the annual event.
The late Efunkoya was a medical practitioner, who became involved in the administration of table tennis in 1962. He was elected chairman of the then Nigeria Table Tennis Association in 1963.
