Bobcats Card Low Round, Take Lead on Day Two of the Eagle Invitational

SPOKANE, Washington Shooting a 291-stroke round as a team, the Montana State Women’s golf team took the lead in the second round at Eastern Washington’s Eagle Invitational, held at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane, Wash.

The 291-stroke second round not only tied for Montana State’s third-best round in school history, but also was the Bobcats’ best single-round team score since the team carded a program-record 289 at the Rose City Collegiate on Sept. 25, 2017.

Tuesday’s round rocketed MSU into first place with a two-round score of 585 (294-291), which is seven strokes ahead of Weber State. Montana State’s scoring contingent of Scarlet Weidig Velazquez, Lauren Greeny, Maddie Montoya and Kameryn Basye helped contribute to the round, which is tied with Weber State’s first round for the best 18-hole team score of the tournament.

“I’m super proud of our smart play today and making some separation of strokes with the field,” Head Coach Brittany Basye said. “We have plenty of work to do tomorrow and we’re going to stay in the present as much as possible and see where it takes us. The players are fired up and ready to finish strong!”

Redshirt sophomore Scarlet Weidig Velazquez gained some separation from the field by carding a 1-under-71 at the par-72, 6,000-yard course. She is currently three strokes under par through two rounds after carding a 70 yesterday. Weidig Velazquez opened the back nine with four birdies in her first five holes.

Freshman Lauren Greeny is tied for third place with her second-straight even-par 72 round of the tournament. Greeny birdied two of her last three holes and jumped two spots on the leaderboard.

“We had some players contributing in big ways today,” Basye said. “Scarlet had the back nine going big and dropping putts with smart golf. Lauren Green held steady with a solid birdie on the last hole.”

Playing as an individual, Jordan Briggs moved up 10 spots after carding an even-par 72 on Tuesday. She is currently in a four-way tie for sixth with a score of 147 (75-72) through two rounds.

The biggest individual jump in the second round came courtesy of freshman Maddie Montoya, who carded a 2-over-74 with three birdies to jump 14 places up the standings. Montoya is currently tied for 20th with a two-round score of 152 strokes (78-74). Kameryn Basye is also in a tie for 20th place with a 152 through two rounds. Cora Rosanova rounded out the Bobcats by shooting a 74 on day two; she is currently tied for 25th.
