Burney Named Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week

PHILADELPHIA Leo Burney picked up Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week honors Tuesday evening, following a masterful two-way effort in Penn’s 2-1 win over Yale in its Ivy League opener Saturday night.

In addition to holding Yale (averaging 10+ shots/5+ on goal a match) to just eight shots with three of them on-target, Burney came up from his backline role to score the winning goal in the 75th minute, sending Penn to its fifth straight victory.

This is the first Weekly Honor of the season for Burney, who picked up a Philly Six DPOTW Honor last October, in addition to being named the William “Bill” Wilkinson Freshman of the Year at the season’s end.

Penn Returns to University City Saturday night for a 5 pm Ivy League Clash with Dartmouth from Dunning-Cohen Champion Field, the team Burney scored an 85th minute equalizer against last season in an eventual double overtime win at Rhodes Field.
