With the T20 World Cup approaching, England and Australia took the final step of their preparation as they played each other in a three-match T20I series. The series opener took place on Sunday (October 10) at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

The high-scoring thriller turned out to be a memorable encounter as both teams brought their A game to the park with the bat. Both sides showed off their muscle and sent warning signals to the world ahead of the marquee tournament.

However, the game was marred with controversy as an incident from the 17th over dominated headlines around the world. England pacer Mark Wood was on his way to taking a catch of Matthew Wade after the latter top edged a delivery into the air. Wood looked all set to take the big wicket but Wade seemingly blocked him from taking the catch.
The action was obviously illegal, but Jos Buttler refused to appeal. England fan group Barmy Army were visibly annoyed at the decision and asked on social media how it had not been given out. “Blatant obstructing of the field. Not like the Aussies to behave unfairly. HOW IS THAT NOT OUT?????” they wrote in a series of tweets on social media.
India’s fan group ‘Bharat Army’ were quick to take notice of the post and trolled their English counterparts. The Indians reminded Barmy Army of their opinions on the Deepti Sharma-Charlotte Dean run-out in recent times and the ‘spirit of cricket’ debate. “No worries, it is the spirit of the game that matters the most lads,” they wrote.

England start on winning note

England held their nerve to seal an 8-run victory at Perth and took a 1-0 lead in the series. Skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales’ 132-run opening stand helped the Three Lions put a big score of 208 on the board. David Warner’s valiant effort went in vain for the hosts.
