The University at Albany field hockey team upset Michigan 2-1 in overtime to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The No. 16 Great Danes (16-4, 6-2 America East) trailed for much of the second half after the No. 4 Wolverines (14-6, 6-2 Big Ten) snuck a shot past goalie Hannah Mangan at the end of the first.
But just as they did in the America East title game, the Great Danes kept fighting and tied it with 2:59 remaining in the fourth quarter. Sophomores Floor de Ruiter and Alison Smisdom combined on the goal, with de Ruiter tipping the ball around Michigan goalie Anna Spieker to finish a shot from Smisdom off a penalty corner.
The winning goal came from freshman Sophia Schoonmaker. Fifth-year Elaina Burchell, the only remaining player from UAlbany’s 2018 America East Championship team, made a Breakaway pass to Schoonmaker, giving her a one-on-one opportunity against Spieker. Schoonmaker brought the ball to the side of the net and smacked it into the corner for the win. The goal was featured on SportsCenter.
Mangan, who was named the Most Outstanding Player in the America East Tournament, made eight saves, including three in overtime.
Several were also highlight-worthy, including one with 1:37 left in the third period when she deflected a shot from Abby Tamer with her left hand.
This team is really close. Theyre my best friends, so I trust them completely in the field. We know each other so well that I think that really helps us play together, Mangan said Tuesday, before the team headed to Michigan.
UAlbany advances to the second round for the third time in program history and will face Penn State at 1 pm Sunday.
