East Lansing, Mich. Well. 12/13 Michigan State played the first game of a four-game season series against archrival Michigan, winning 2-1 over the No. 6/7 Wolverines on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena.
Michigan State matches its win total from 2021-22 as it improves to 12-6-1 overall and 6-4-1 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines are now 11-7-1, 3-6-0 in conference play.
Michigan opened the scoring midway through the first period, but the Spartans tied it before the end of the period on a field goal. Cole Krygier. Freshman Tiernan Shoudy made his first mark of the contest with what would be the game-winner in the second period.
The Spartans stifled the Wolverine offense in the third period as MSU allowed Michigan just five shots on goal in the final period and 23 overall for the game. The Spartans made 31 shots and Erik Portillo made 29 saves.
TJ Hughes scored the lone goal for Michigan, his eighth of the season.
The teams return to action tomorrow with Yost’s rematch. Game time is at 6:30 p.m.
NOTABLE STATISTICS
- Michigan State scored its first short field goal of the season Cole Krygier, The equalizer in the first period. It was the first shortstop for the Spartans since February 19, 2021, when Tommy Apap made it in Minnesota.

The first season: Both teams were full of energy and skated a fast-paced opening period where both teams made opposing goaltenders scramble and make big saves. The Wolverines found the scoreboard first when TJ Hughes pounced on a loose puck in the right circle and winged it toward the net. The puck found some light and passed St Cyr at 13:29. The Spartans answered with a tying goal at 17:04 when Daniel Russel hit the puck along the wall deep under the goal line. Karsen Dorwart. Dorwart put it back on the wall Cole Krygier, who threw it into the net and it found its way past Portillo to tie the game at 1-1. MSU was 13-8 in shots and won 10 of 13 kickoffs.

St. Cyr made a couple of big stops in the frame.
