SPOKANE, Wash. Three new top-10 finishes and a freshman record were provided by a small group of Huskies who made a big impression at the early-season Spokane Invitational today on the indoor track at The Podium.

Two of the top 10 marks came from the Dawgs in their Husky debut. Prestin Artis had the best indoor long jump for a Husky since 2013, and Sarah Ferguson broke the freshman record in the pole vault, both also taking the win.

In the women’s vault, Ferguson, a freshman from Lexington, Ky. went 13-9 in his varsity debut. This broke the freshman record, which since 2012 was held by Georgia Reynolds at 13-8. It also tied for No. 6 in UW indoor history.

The UW freshmen went 1-2 on vault, as Ferguson may have to battle his teammate for the freshman record this season. Avril Wilson of Duvall, Wash., cleared a PR of 13-5 to take second today.

Artiks had three attempts over 24 feet and a best of 24-3 on his sixth and final attempt. That puts him at No. 8 on the top-10 list, marking the Dawg’s best interior mark since 2013.

Second year student Anthony Smith smashed a PR indoors with a win in the 200m, running a time of 21.28 to rank No. 5 in school history, the best time by a Husky since 2009.

Three other Dawgs had strong starts in the 400m. Matthew Wilkinson was second overall in 48.67, new Dawg Daniel Gaik was Fifth in 48.83, and Sam Baricevic was eighth with a time of 49.39.

Another win came from a senior Cass Elliottas the Pac-12 hurdles champion rebounded in the 800 meters to win by nearly two seconds in 1:50.82.

The sprinters ended the day with another victory and at the same time broke the institution’s record in the 4×4 relay with a time of 3:11.67. The group included Elliott, Wilkinson, Gaik and Smith.

All-American decathlon Ollie Thorner opened his indoor season, as did freshman Bruno Comin Pescador. In the 60-meter hurdles, Pescador clocked 8.66 and Thorner ran 8.73. Thorner won the long jump 21-10 and Pescador 22-0. Thorner also cleared 6-2.
