Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India]December 11 (ANI): The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras on Sunday organized a ‘Sports Carnival’ with the help of ICMR and TTK’s Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) for the disabled.

IIT Madras Director Professor V Kamakoti inaugurated the event at the Student Activity Center on the IIT Madras campus.

The carnival was called ‘Sports 4 All’ and saw the participation of over 200 players from Delhi, Nagpur, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, most of them trying the sport for the first time in their lives. .

People with disabilities participate in sports such as wheelchair badminton, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair cricket, wheelchair racing, rifle shooting and table tennis.

The disabled and mentally ill participated in the programs and enjoyed the sports event, which also saw events such as singing and dancing.

Professor Sujatha Sreenivasan of the institute said, “We planned this sports carnival for the first time at IIT, Madras with the help of ICMR.The registration for the event started last month and we have received participation from a large number of people with disabilities.

“They are all excited to be a part of this sporting carnival,” he said.

Justin Yesudas (Para Olympic player) said, “Everyone here is excited and happy to be a part of this sporting event. Many disabled people can also play any game like a normal person.”

“I am so happy to be in this place. I see everything with excitement. I am learning and trying to take this idea to Europe and teach them to do it even in European countries”, Francis, a visitor from Germany.

Prof V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras told ANI, “We are running this Sports 4 All program for disabled persons. We have already done a lot in new technology for disabled people and work on other new projects is going on.”
